Position Description:    

We invite applications for a full-time, tenure-track position in Data Science at the level of Assistant Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at John Carroll University, beginning August 2021.  Full consideration will be given to candidates whose applications are completed by February 5, 2021, but applications will be accepted until the position is filled.

First offered in 2017, the B.S. in Data Science at John Carroll University is an interdisciplinary major housed in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science.  We seek candidates who demonstrate a strong commitment to and potential for excellent teaching and fostering diversity and inclusion in a liberal arts setting.  Candidates must have an active research program in some area of Data Science, have the ability to contribute to curricular and program development in Data Science, and will be committed to working closely with students and faculty from the College of Arts and Sciences and the Boler College of Business.  We seek candidates whose research in Data Science invites contributions by undergraduate students, and who will contribute to curricular and program development in Data Science and Data Analytics at both the undergraduate and graduate level across the University. 

With a load reduction for research, normal duties include nine hours of teaching per semester and continued scholarship, as well as other departmental and university professional responsibilities.

In addition to the major in Data Science, the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science offers majors in Computer Science, Computer Science with Healthcare Information Technology, Mathematics, and Teaching Mathematics.  We are a small, dynamic department, and as such, we offer the opportunity for faculty and students to explore trending areas, experiment with new pedagogy, and be creative in developing new classes and programs.

Required Qualifications:

Candidates must hold a Ph.D., or expect completion of the Ph.D. by Fall 2021, in Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, or a related discipline.  Candidates must be able to teach undergraduate and beginning graduate courses in Data Science topics such as machine learning, big data analytics, natural language processing, social media analytics, or health analytics.  They must also have the ability to contribute to the design of new Data Science courses at the undergraduate and graduate level.
