Florida International University’s STEM Transformation Institute is seeking to fill at least two post-doctoral researcher positions for the Catalyzing Change in Calculus Project as described below:
  • Implement and conduct research on the Modeling Practices in Calculus (MPC) intervention, a student-centric curriculum where students emulate the practices of mathematicians in the classroom to learn calculus. Recently recommended for funding by the National Science Foundation Hispanic-serving Institution STEM Program, the intervention will directly impact over 15,000 students enrolled at two Hispanic-serving Institutions, where over 80% of students are from historically-underrepresented groups. The specific aims of the project include generating new knowledge on the effectiveness of the MPC curriculum and how the curriculum fosters learning for highly diverse student populations. Further, it will generate knowledge on faculty adoption practices and institutional change as it establishes an institutional culture to sustain and expand the intervention. The position will involve both the teaching of section(s) of calculus as well as planning, analysis and dissemination of the accompanying research study.

The primary responsibilities of these post-doctoral researchers will be conducting mathematics education research; however, these positions utilize a hybrid design that integrates teaching experience with research activities to facilitate implementation of evidence-based practices and thus preparing the candidate for an academic career. Candidates for these positions should have completed their PhD in mathematics or mathematics education. The ideal candidates will have experience working in undergraduate education research and have strong quantitative research skills and experience including survey and concept inventory data collection and analysis, and classroom observation. Experience with the R software system would be an added benefit.
