The Department of Mathematical Sciences at Worcester Polytechnic Institute invites applications for a postdoctoral position (renewable contingent on funding) in the research group of Professor Sarah Olson, beginning Summer 2021, on the topics of mathematical biology and computational fluid dynamics. This research position is to work with PI Olson to develop analytical and computational models and methods to investigate different biological phenomena. Current research is focused on developing novel methods to understand efficiency and interactions related to swimming micro-organisms, cell-division in cells with extra centrosomes, and activity at the neuromuscular junction. A Ph.D in the Mathematical Sciences or other closely related fields is required. Applicants should submit all materials electronically through MathJobs, which includes a cover letter, curriculum vitae, and a statement describing current and planned research. At least three letters of recommendation are required. Review of applications will begin on January 1st, 2021 and will continue until the positions are filled. The Mathematical Sciences Department currently has over 30 tenured/tenure-track faculty members, 7 postdoctoral scholars, and features two vibrant Ph.D. programs in Mathematical Sciences, and in Statistics. Faculty in Mathematical Sciences are also affiliated with cutting-edge interdisciplinary programs such as Data Sciences and Bioinformatics and Computational biology. There are many departmental and campus-wide opportunities for professional development, as well as many active seminar series and outreach opportunities. The department offers bachelor's degrees in Mathematical Sciences and in Actuarial Mathematics, and master's degrees in Applied Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Financial Mathematics, and Industrial Mathematics (see http://www.wpi.edu/+math). The department has a strong reputation for its successful programs addressing mathematical and statistical problems in industry (http://www.wpi.edu/+CIMS). Founded in 1865, WPI is one of the nation's first technological universities. A highly selective private university located within an hour of Boston, WPI is consistently ranked among the top 70 research institutions by US News & World Report.
