Position Description:

*** this position has been closed and new applications are no longer accepted. ***

Postdoctoral research positions in (1) Quantum information/foundations and (2) Algebraic topology are available in the research group of Dr. Cihan Okay in the Department of Mathematics at Bilkent University. The starting date is flexible and can be any time on or after Sept 1, 2021. Applicants are encouraged to have all materials submitted by Apr 15, 2021; however applications will be accepted until the positions are filled.

This position will be initially awarded for one year; and may be renewed contingent upon strong performance, conduct, and availability of funds. The salary is competitive; and benefits include private health insurance and fully furnished free on-campus lodging. Email inquiries may be sent to cihan.okay@bilkent.edu.tr.

The project is titled "Topology of quantum resources: Homotopical methods in resource theories for quantum information and quantum computing" and funded by the Air Force Office of Scientific Research. For further details on the project visit http://cihan.okay.bilkent.edu.tr/.

(1) Quantum information/foundations: This part of the project requires a PhD in mathematics/physics/computer science in the fields of quantum foundations, quantum computing, quantum information and cryptography or a closely related field. The main theme is to explore quantum resources from a topological perspective towards an eye on applications to quantum information processing. This builds on the earlier work on the homotopical approach to quantum contextuality and its resource-theoretic value in measurement-based quantum computation. Experience in algebraic topology is not required, but would be helpful for candidates interested in collaboration with (2).

(2) Algebraic topology: This part of the project requires a PhD in mathematics in the field of algebraic topology or a closely related field. The goal is to understand the homotopy theory of classifying spaces for commutativity and related simplicial structures. This involves methods from homotopy theory (simplicial and stable), homological algebra, and category theory. The candidate is expected to be experienced in one of these areas. Experience in quantum information/foundations is not required, but would be helpful for candidates interested in collaboration with (1).
