About us:

The School of Mathematical Science has an exceptionally strong research presence across the spectrum of areas within Pure, Applied Mathematics and Statistics and is currently organised into seven research groups, namely: Algebra and Number Theory, Combinatorics, Complex Systems and Networks, Dynamical Systems and Statistical Physics, Geometry and Analysis, Probability and Applications, and Statistics and Data Science. The School also has large and popular undergraduate and graduate programmes. Moreover, the University is a partner of the Alan Turing Institute, facilitating exciting opportunities for collaborations with other academic institutions and industry.

Following a period of significant growth, the School comprises of 74 academic staff and associate lecturers, 16 research assistants and 12 members of professional services staff. The School is home to around 90 PhD students, and approximately 1,000 undergraduates and 100 master level students. Recently, £18M was invested in the School’s building transformation project to provide state-of-the-art research, teaching, and study facilities for staff and students. The School moved back into its fully refurbished building during the summer of 2019.

About the role:

Applications are invited for a Lecturer, Senior Lecturer or Reader in Mathematical Data Science. We are seeking to appoint up to an outstanding candidate with a successful track record of applying rigorous research methods to address emerging problems in the general field of data science. Areas of focus include but are not limited to statistics, applied and computational topology, foundations of data driven approaches to complex systems or finance, machine learning, optimisation, inverse problems and uncertainty quantification. Interdisciplinary research areas are also welcome. The successful candidate will be expected to develop a research platform and interact with one or more of the existing research groups in the School, as well contribute to the further development of the School’s portfolio of Data Science master level programmes. All candidates are requested to address these aspects in their research and teaching statements.

All candidates should have a strong interest in pursuing excellence in teaching and supervising graduate students.

At Lecturer level a successful applicant will have demonstrated exceptional potential for achieving research excellence. At Senior Lecturer level applicants should have an excellent research profile and a strong track record of independent research as evidenced, for example, by successful PhD supervision, substantial external research funding, and/or a sustained publication record of well cited papers. At Reader level, all these will be essential requirements and candidates will be expected to have an internationally recognised research presence.

Pay & Benefits:

The post is full-time and permanent. For an appointment at Lecturer level, starting salary will be in the range of £42,433 - £52,833 inclusive of London Allowance. For an appointment at Senior Lecturer and Reader level, starting salary will be in the range of £55,840 - £62,415. Benefits include 30 days annual leave, USS pension scheme and interest free season ticket loan.
