Post-Doctoral Scholar - Applied Math

The National Science Foundation has granted the UC Merced Department of Applied Mathematics a five-year award to establish the Data-Intensive Research And Computing (DIRAC) Research Training Group (RTG) focused on the theme of Computational and Data-Enabled Sciences. Four different SMaRT teams constitute this RTG: (i) Energy and the Environment, (ii) Mathematical Biology, (iii) Imaging and Sensing, and (iv) Scientific Computing.

The UC Merced Department of Applied Mathematics invites applications for one Postdoctoral Researcher for AY 2021-2022 to participate and engage with the DIRAC-RTG SMaRT teams (i) Energy and the Environment and for one Postdoctoral Researcher for AY 2021-2022 to participate and engage with the DIRAC-RTG SMaRT team (iv) Scientific Computing, including Data Sciences. This 3-year position requires the successful candidate to conduct research and teach 1 course each semester during the academic year.

Postdoctoral researchers (PRs) play a vital role in the DIRAC-RTG, and through it will launch their own careers. We anticipate that by the end of their training, Postdoctoral Researchers will have developed: (i) a well-defined, independent, and interdisciplinary research program, (ii) advanced oral and written communication skills, (iii) the ability to mentor students in research, and for those who plan on pursuing a career in academia, (iv) a professional teaching portfolio.

The minimum qualifications required for this position is a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics, Mathematics or a related field and having some teaching experience at the collegiate level are required at the time of application.

Preference will be given to candidates at the early stage of their careers. We are seeking exceptionally qualified candidates with expertise matching at least one of the SMaRT teams. Special attention will be paid to applicants who can collaborate with researchers in applied mathematics and other fields in natural sciences, engineering and/or social sciences at UC Merced.

Salary is based on the University of California Academic Salary Scales. This is a full-time, one-year appointment with the possibility of renewal based on availability of funding, ongoing operational needs and satisfactory performance.
