The Institute took its first undergraduate intake in September 2017. It currently delivers four degree programmes in mathematics with mathematics, mathematics with economics, mathematics with statistics and mathematics with information computing science. These programmes attract high quality undergraduate students from across China and are taught in English, with the mathematics component being delivered by flying faculty staff from the University of Birmingham.

The School of Mathematics at the University of Birmingham is a supportive, family friendly and people-focussed environment, committed to equality, diversity and inclusivity. We encourage applications from the widest community. The School has a Bronze Athena Swan award, demonstrating its commitment to supporting women in science.

In this round of recruitment, the School of Mathematics at the University of Birmingham is looking to appoint up to three lecturers to join the J-BJI flying faculty team. This will increase the team to a full complement of 16 colleagues. On appointment you become a full, permanent member of the School of Mathematics, based in Birmingham.

The historic travel pattern has been two teaching blocks delivered at Panyu campus of one month each with additional short trips for some staff for orientation and during examinations. Graduation will become another occasion. Staff currently live on campus in a suite of individual flats. Visa and other operational needs may vary this in the future. When in the UK, meetings, teaching and other activity take place to accommodate the time difference.

The modules are taught intensively. In any one teaching block, there will be four members of the team at based in Guangzhou responsible for the delivery of three modules and their associated examples classes. The Panyu based J-BJI Professional Services Staff team of 3 supports your teaching delivery and assists with accommodation queries.

We are seeking enthusiastic and committed staff with experience of, or demonstrable potential for, delivering standard first and second year material as well as third year modules covering topics such as applied statistics, game theory or optimization to a broad range of motivated students. Typically you will have, or be developing, an exciting and active research profile. Alternatively, teaching focussed candidates will have or be developing an exciting scholarship and pedagogical profile. In both instances, possibly with research interests that might lead to impact activity.

You must have a PhD, or equivalent, in statistics, mathematics or a related subject. Preference will be given to candidates working in areas such as applied statistics, epidemiology, medical statistics, econometrics, stochastic modelling, financial mathematics, data science and machine learning or optimization. We also encourage flying faculty to contribute to the development of the School’s undergraduate or masters curricula taught in Birmingham. The posts are available at either Assistant or Associate Professor grade depending on your relevant prior experience. The appointments panel will consider teaching focused appointments for candidates with a developing profile in educational leadership.

These posts are available from July 2021. Interviews are likely to take place in early June. Interviewees will be asked to give a short teaching demonstration.
