The University of Kansas has a Research Assistant Professor/Postdoctoral Researcher position open in Computational Imaging and Therapy in the Department of Radiation Oncology at KU Medical Center (KUMC) in Kansas City. This appointment is a non-tenure track, limited term appointment for three years, subject to satisfactory performance. The goal is to help the appointee to grow and transit into an independent principal investigator. Ph.D. or ABD, is expected by the start date of appointment.

The postdoctoral appointee will be mentored jointly by Dr. Hao Gao at KUMC and Dr. Weizhang Huang in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Kansas. Candidates with strong mathematical and computational background who are enthusiastic about solving clinical problems of cancer radiotherapy and interested in career development opportunities in the intersection of medical physics and mathematics are strongly encouraged to apply.

A PhD in computational mathematics, computer science, or a related discipline with expertise in scientific computing is required. Knowledge of medical physics is an advantage, though not a requirement.

The Department of Radiation Oncology provides a full range of clinical services at the University of Kansas Health System and five area community facilities with over 3,500 treatment courses annually. UKHS clinics are equipped with a total of nine Varian linear accelerators, one Tomotherapy, Big Bore CT scanners, PET scanners, IntraBeam and Calypso systems. Four new Varian Truebeam treatment units will be installed in UKHS sites in the next two years. In addition, an IBA Proteus One with pencil beam scanning and CBCT capabilities is currently being installed and will go clinical in early 2022.

The Department of Mathematics has an internationally recognized faculty and a strong graduate program leading to both the M.A. and Ph.D. degrees. A broad range of programs is possible including algebra, analysis, combinatorics, control theory, dynamical systems, geometry, numerical analysis, probability, statistics, stochastic analysis/control, partial differential equations, set theory, and topology. The graduate programs have been a central part of the department’s research and teaching. Historic Snow Hall, which houses the department, contains state-of- the-art classrooms, lecture spaces, computer labs, and other facilities.

Job Description

90% Research:

Develop and maintain an active research program that is advanced substantially beyond the level of the Ph.D. thesis. It should provide solid evidence that the faculty member is a dedicated scholar whose research will continue to develop in depth and importance throughout his or her career.

10% Service:

Participate in appropriate professional activities, such as serving on panels, co-organizing workshops/conferences, and refereeing or reviewing manuscripts for respected journals.

Required qualifications

Evaluation of the following requirements will be made through (1) descriptions of work experience and educational experiences in letter of application, (2) record of accomplishments and productivity addressed in resume, and (3) information provided from professional references.

• PhD in computational mathematics, computer science, or a related discipline with expertise in scientific computing (e.g., optimization, numerical PDE, applied inverse problem, and deep learning) • Fluent in programing with a computer language • Demonstrated commitment to excellence in research as evidenced by graduate coursework, dissertation research, publications, and/or externally funded research grants.

Desired qualification

• Knowledge and research experience in medical physics (e.g., image reconstruction, treatment planning, linear Boltzmann transport equation)
