Position Description:    

Applications are invited for three Lectureships in Pure Mathematics in the Department of Mathematics at King’s College London.

Candidates are expected to have a PhD in Mathematics, or a closely related area, and research expertise in some area of pure mathematics (broadly interpreted). They should be able to contribute to the development of teaching in mathematics at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

Candidates should have the potential to carry out research which has high levels of originality, innovation and depth that may lead to significant impact on their field in the long term.

The successful candidates will be expected to: • Undertake a self-directed programme of research and scholarship at a level commensurate with the current international standards of excellence within the department. • Demonstrate a proven ability or potential for achieving research excellence in an area that fits within one of our existing research groups, centres or interest groups. • Promote the reputation of their research group through scientific meetings, scholarship and other externally facing activities. • Deliver an excellent student experience through innovative teaching and assessment methods for both undergraduate and postgraduate taught programmes. • Provide supervision to postgraduate research students. • Enthusiastically contribute to academic management, and support the administration and organisation of the department to further its education, research activities and ambitions.

Key responsibilities:

As a Lecturer in Pure Mathematics you will strengthen the reputation, culture and ambitions of the department and wider institution by:

• Undertaking a self-directed programme of research and scholarship at a level commensurate with the current international standards of excellence within the department; • Demonstrating a proven ability or potential for achieving research excellence in an area that fits in to one of our research groups, centres or interest groups; • Promoting the reputation of the research group through scientific meetings, scholarship, and other externally-facing activities; • Delivering an excellent student experience through innovative teaching and assessment methods for both undergraduate and postgraduate taught programmes, in core mathematics and an area of pure mathematics; • Providing supervision to postgraduate research students; • Enthusiastically contributing to academic management and supporting the administration and organisation of the department to further its education, research activities and ambitions; • Be responsible for the wellbeing and pastoral care of students, including acting as Personal Tutor; • Engage with and contribute to department, faculty and institutional level initiatives in accordance with education strategy at all levels of the organisation.

Skills, knowledge, and experience Essential criteria:

• PhD in Mathematics or equivalent • Strong research record in any area of Pure Mathematics, as evidenced by publications in high quality journals and conferences • In-depth knowledge in an area of Pure Mathematics • Potential to attract external research funds • Ability to teach undergraduate and postgraduate modules in core mathematics some areas of Pure Mathematics • Ability to supervise postgraduate research students • Ability to make significant contribution to administrative work • Excellent presentation and communication skills • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with an excellent standard of English language • A desire and vision to advance research development.

Desirable criteria • Experience in attracting external research funds • Experience of teaching and examining • Experience of administration
