Overview

The Multiscale Methods (MM) Group at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking a highly motivated senior scientist to develop and lead a research program in mathematics research for material science applications.

The MM group is responsible for the design and development of basic numerical algorithms and analysis necessary for simulating and understanding complex, multi-scale systems. The group is part of the Mathematics in Computation Section of the Computer Science and Mathematics (CSM) division. CSM delivers fundamental and applied research capabilities in a wide range of areas, including applied mathematics and computer science, experimental computing systems, scalable algorithms and systems, artificial intelligence and machine learning, data management, workflow systems, analysis and visualization technologies, programming systems and environments, and system science and engineering.

Major Duties/Responsibilities

We are seeking a recognized technical leader to initiate and lead research and development projects. The successful candidate will work closely with other mathematicians and computational scientists, collaborate with partners in domain applications, and communicate with sponsors. Research activities may include, but are not limited to:

Providing mathematical formulations and analysis of problems from material science. Developing a wide range of modeling and simulation tools that enable advances in material science, ranging from basis numerical analysis to scalable algorithms that leverage high performance computing resources at ORNL. Disseminating results in high-quality, peer-review publications and presenting these results at conferences and workshops. Leading collaborations with industry, academia, government labs, and applications developers in a variety of venues. Leading and contributing to research proposals and reporting to major funding agencies. US citizenship is not a requirement for consideration.

Basic Qualifications

A PhD in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Physics, or Computational Science. At least six years of relevant research experience, beyond the PhD. An established track record of research relevant to material science applications. Demonstrated experience in leading research and development projects. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Effective interpersonal skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with numerical methods for high-performance computing. Experience working with applied and domain scientists.
