The Department of Statistical and Actuarial Sciences, in the School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences, Faculty of Science at Western University is pleased to announce a search for a 3-year limited-term Lecturer or Assistant Professor position in Data Science. The rank and salary will be commensurate with the successful applicant’s qualifications and experience. The starting date will be September 1, 2021.

The Department hosts an undergraduate program in Data Science and a professional graduate program in Data Analytics and is also a key contributor to the new initiative that will unify instruction in Data Science across the campus community. Faculty within the department study a diverse range of both theoretical and applied problems, and include members with joint appointments in Computer Science, Economics, and the Brain and Mind Institute. This appointment is intended to support the teaching mission of the Department in the area of Data Science.

The successful candidate is expected to teach Data Science and Statistics courses at the undergraduate level. They will provide leadership for the undergraduate Data Science program of the Department and be actively involved in the recently introduced Data Science courses offered to our campus community. The successful candidate must satisfy one of the following:

• a PhD in Statistics (or closely related field) with demonstrated post-secondary teaching experience of at least 3 courses in Statistics and/or Data Science; • a MSc in Statistics (or closely related field) with a minimum of 3 years post-secondary teaching experience in Statistics and/or Data Science; • a MSc in Statistics (or closely related field) with a minimum of 3 years working in a data science position in industry or government.

and have demonstrated excellent communication skills. Preferred assets include: experience developing and delivering timely, high-quality courses related to statistics and data science; formal training in education or professional development related to university teaching and learning; scholarship on teaching and learning in the areas of statistics and data science; a PhD in Statistics or a closely related field; and experience as a statistical consultant or data scientist within industry or government. All qualifications will be evaluated based on the candidate’s career stage and chosen career path.

The Department of Statistical and Actuarial Sciences (www.uwo.ca/stats) offers an exceptional environment for interdisciplinary research, teaching, and training in statistics and its applications. It has undergraduate and graduate programs in financial modelling, actuarial science and statistics supported by 23 faculty members. The Department is actively involved in a professional Masters of Data Analytics program hosted by the Faculty of Science and is the home department for undergraduate program modules in Data Science, both of which are mounted in close collaboration with the Department of Computer Science.

It is also involved in a collaborative professional Masters in Financial Economics program jointly offered with Economics, Law, and Business.
