The School of Mathematics at Georgia Tech expects to make a tenured or tenure-track faculty hire in the area of Mathematical Foundations of Data Science. It will be an open-rank position joint with the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) and/or H. Milton Stewart School of Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISyE). The position presents exceptional opportunities in foundational research, in training programs, and in cross-disciplinary connections. The School of Math is a key player in several Institutes and programs at Georgia Tech, including a new PhD program in Machine Learning, cross-disciplinary PhD programs in Algorithms, Combinatorics, and Optimization and in Quantitative Biosciences, and cross-disciplinary Master’s degrees in Statistics and in Quantitative Computational Finance. In addition, Georgia Tech is pursuing complementary recruitment in related subareas of Optimization, Statistics and Machine Learning. The Schools play leadership roles in TRIAD, the cross-disciplinary NSF-funded center in foundations of data science, in the Center for Machine Learning at Georgia Tech (ML@GT), in the Institute for Data Engineering and Science (IDEaS), and in the NSF-Simons Center, the Southeast Center for Mathematics and Biology.

Priority will be given to those candidates who: (1) show the potential to carry out research of exceptional quality at Georgia Tech; (2) complement existing strengths in the participating Schools; (3) enhance connections to programs and units at Georgia Tech; (4) have strong potential for external funding; (5) demonstrate enthusiasm and potential for supervision of junior researchers at all levels; and (6) have a demonstrated commitment to high quality teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, as the duties will include teaching graduate and undergraduate courses. The potential for contributing to the strategic priorities in Math, ECE, and ISyE at Georgia Tech, such as collaborating with researchers in other fields and engaging with diverse communities, will be considered a plus. For additional information on present and future needs in the Schools, see http://www.math.gatech.edu/employment-opportunities/ , https://www.isye.gatech.edu/about/employment-opportunities/faculty-positions , and https://www.ece.gatech.edu/faculty-openings .

Candidates doing deep research in all areas of mathematics and statistics with applications in data science will be considered. This includes, in particular, such areas as high-dimensional probability, high-dimensional statistics, mathematical and statistical foundations of machine learning and signal processing. A Ph.D. (or its equivalent) in Mathematics, Statistics or a closely related field is required. Applications should also include evidence of teaching interest and abilities. Candidates for Associate and Full Professor positions should submit a statement outlining their vision for leadership and service as a senior faculty member at Georgia Tech.

Applications should consist of a cover letter, a curriculum vita, and a brief summary of future research plans. The cover letter should provide evidence of teaching interest and abilities, and of skills and commitments for engaging productively with diverse communities. Applicants are also asked to supply the complete contact information for three references. Applications should be submitted directly to http://www.mathjobs.org. In exceptional circumstances where electronic submission is not possible, applications may be sent to the Hiring Committee, School of Mathematics, Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, GA, 30332-0160, USA. For full consideration applicants are strongly encouraged to submit all materials before December 1, 2021. However, consideration of applications is ongoing until positions are filled. Georgia Tech is an equal education/employment opportunity institution dedicated to building a diverse community. We strongly encourage applications from women, underrepresented minorities, individuals with disabilities, and veterans. Georgia Tech has policies to promote a healthy work-life balance and is aware that attracting faculty may require meeting the needs of two careers. Applications by highly qualified candidates from groups underrepresented in the mathematical sciences and engineering are particularly encouraged.

A top-ranked public research university, Georgia Tech is situated in the heart of Atlanta, a diverse and vibrant city with great economic and cultural strengths. The Institute is a member of the University System of Georgia, the Georgia Research Alliance, and the Association of American Universities. Georgia Tech prides itself on its technology resources, collaborations, high-quality student body, and its commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. It is located in Midtown, Atlanta’s vibrant and growing technology corridor. As one of the fastest-growing cities in the United States, home to nearly 5.5 million people and boasting the busiest airport in the world, Atlanta combines classic small-town southern hospitality with all the amenities of a cosmopolitan city. The moderate cost of living, which is below the national average, and the pleasant climate, which permits year-round outdoor activities, makes Atlanta appealing to many.
