Position Description

The Department of Mathematics at California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) invites applications for a Tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor (Academic Year) with the appointment starting in Fall 2022.

Department of Mathematics

The Mathematics Department offers a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics, and we teach many service courses. We have ten tenured or tenure-track faculty members with a variety of backgrounds and research interests in pure and applied mathematics and mathematics education, and we have several lecturers with full- and part-time appointments. We are a group committed to the mission of the university, and we work collegially to prepare students for successful careers. We are located in the Los Angeles area, near major industries and research universities. Our faculty members attend seminars and colloquia at home and at UCLA, USC, Caltech, and other nearby California State University campuses.

Our mission is to provide our students with a strong foundation in mathematics, preparing them for success in graduate study, professional careers in business, industry, and government, and teaching.

The Position

The typical teaching load is twelve units per semester (new faculty teach nine units per semester for the first two years) but faculty who are active in grants and projects use grant funds to reduce their teaching load. Published research is expected and is a requirement for tenure and promotion.

Responsibilities The successful candidate will be expected to:

  1. Teach effectively in a variety of courses for undergraduate mathematics majors, and service courses, with a particular focus on the seminar in mathematics education and courses for future teachers;
  2. Maintain appropriate research and scholarly activities in mathematics or statistics education, mathematics, applied mathematics or statistics;
  3. Participate in updating and revising the department’s undergraduate curriculum;
  4. Participate in the activities of the mathematics department, such as seminars and math club events;
  5. Assist with student advising and program development;
  6. Serve on departmental, college, and university committees.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in mathematics or statistics education and a master’s or equivalent in mathematics or statistics; or, Ph.D. in applied mathematics, statistics, or closely related field;
  • Ability to teach a broad range of mathematics and service courses to students with diverse backgrounds and skills;
  • Commitment and ability to maintain an active program of scholarship and/or research;
  • Commitment to ongoing improvement and use of effective teaching strategies;
  • Applicants must have experience in working with students from diverse age, socioeconomic, cultural, and academic backgrounds.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Specialty in mathematics education or statistics education
  • Experience in collaborative projects with other math/science/education faculty
  • Experience in departmental service, such as student advising, outreach, and mentoring
  • Experience with research projects or capstone experiences for undergraduate mathematics and science students
  • Familiarity with or experience in K-12 education

Employment Requirement – Background Check

Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.
