POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The Mathematics Department at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, invites applications for tenure-track positions in Statistics, Operations Research or Applied Mathematics with a preference at the Assistant Professor level, to begin in the fall semester of 2022. Candidates with appropriate experience will be considered at a higher rank. The position involves: 1. Teaching approximately 9-10 contact hours per semester with small section sizes (10-25 students) and 2-4 preparations per academic year. 2. Teaching and participating in the development of our new core course in Data Science. 3. Participating in the development of the curriculum of the Academy’s new Data Science major. 4. Conducting and publishing peer-reviewed research. 5. Mentoring undergraduate research projects. 6. Providing service to the institution and department consistent with standards in the academic profession.

The Mathematics Department is the largest department at the Academy, with 40 civilians with PhD’s and 22 military officers with advanced degrees. The department offers majors in Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, Operations Research, and Mathematics with Economics. Faculty members receive full federal government service benefits. MINIMUM AND PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum: • A PhD in Statistics, Operations Research, Applied Mathematics or a closely related field is required (anticipated completion of Ph.D. no later than June 2022 is acceptable). • U.S. citizenship is required.

Preferred: • Candidates with strong potential or demonstrated excellence in teaching, research, and service are preferred. • Preferred qualities related to teaching include: teaching experience in an undergraduate setting, demonstrated effectiveness in teaching, experience supervising student research, experience mentoring students from underrepresented groups, demonstrated commitment to developing teaching excellence, and evidence of course development. • Evidence of strong research activity includes publications, presentations, and external grant support, including research in Data Science. • Evidence of strong service contributions may include: conference organization, outreach activities, significant service activities at the applicant’s current institution, and engagement with professional societies. • Postdoctoral experience is preferred but not required. • The Mathematics Department values its diverse faculty and student body.
