MASSACHUSETTS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY

DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS

Mathematics-Simons Collaboration on Arithmetic Geometry, Number Theory, and Computation, to join an MIT-based team working under the direction of principal investigators Bjorn Poonen and Andrew Sutherland as part of a collaboration with PIs at Boston University, Harvard, Dartmouth, and Brown. Will be engaged in a combination of mathematical research and software development. Responsibilities include designing and implementing algorithms in arithmetic geometry and number theory and facilitating the integration of these algorithms into existing and future computer algebra systems; compiling and analyzing number-theoretic research datasets and integrating the results into existing and future platforms such as the L-functions and Modular Forms Database; coordinating with researchers across multiple institutions, both internal and external to the collaboration, working in areas relevant to the research agenda of the collaboration; assisting with training and development, e.g., running workshops or teaching courses on topics relevant to the collaboration and supervising student researchers; participating in monthly meetings and annual workshops run by the collaboration; and disseminating research results through conference presentations and journal articles.

The Simons Collaboration aims to accelerate research through the development of computational tools that realize recent theoretical advances in arithmetic geometry and number theory, and to exploit these tools to advance the research frontier in these fields. Please apply by January 14, 2022 to receive full consideration.

REQUIRED: Ph.D. in mathematics with a research background in number theory or arithmetic geometry; computer programming experience; familiarity with a computer algebra package, e.g., Magma, SageMath, or PARI/GP; and ability to work independently and as part of a team and to travel and present research results. Fluency in one or more programming languages (Python, Julia, C/C++) a plus.

Please apply with your cover letter, CV including publication list, and 3 reference letters. A research statement is recommended but not required.

The start date is September 1, 2022 (negotiable.) The anticipated end date will be August 31, 2024.

Hiring for this position is contingent upon the existence of funding.
