Detailed Job Description
The Rochester Institute of Technology seeks a visionary and dynamic leader to serve as the Head of the School of Mathematical Sciences (SMS), an academic unit dedicated to advancing the frontiers of mathematical sciences. As the chief academic, fiscal, and administrative officer of the School, the Head provides leadership, advocacy, oversight, and management. The Head is responsible for overseeing academic, student, faculty, and staff affairs, and for leading the research, scholarship, and operational activities of the School. The daily operation of the School emphasizes an open and inclusive management style that inspires and supports the faculty, staff, and students in their individual and collaborative efforts. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Overseeing and continually improving the SMS undergraduate and graduate programs in addition to all of the curricula housed within the SMS.
  • Promoting research, scholarship, professional development and encouraging discovery, entrepreneurship, and experiential learning opportunities for faculty, staff, and students.
  • Fostering SMS participation in interdisciplinary projects and programs internally and externally.
  • Recruiting and retaining top-tier faculty that are aligned with the strategic plans of SMS, the College of Science, and the Rochester Institute of Technology.
  • Developing, supporting, and advocating for faculty, staff and students at all levels.
  • Facilitating the completion and implementation of a five-year SMS strategic plan.
  • Cultivating existing and prospective donors and research partners.
  • Managing the SMS financial resources.


SMS Head appointments are five-year renewable terms.

Department/College Description
The School of Mathematical Sciences is one of six academic units in RIT’s College of Science, which also houses the Chester F. Carlson Center for Imaging Science, the Integrated Sciences Academy, the School of Chemistry and Materials Science, the School of Physics and Astronomy, and the Thomas H. Gosnell School of Life Sciences.

The SMS promotes research in mathematical and statistical sciences and is the home of 79 full-time faculty members, four administrative staff members, three undergraduate programs (Applied Mathematics, Computational Mathematics, and Applied Statistics and Data Analytics), two MS programs (Applied and Computational Mathematics and Applied Statistics), and a Ph.D. program in Mathematical Modeling. The SMS supports a large portion of RIT programs by offering 380 sections of various math and stat courses to approximately 11,000 students each academic year.

Required Minimum Qualifications
We seek an individual who is committed to the principles expressed in RIT’s core values, honor code, and statement of diversity. A successful candidate must have the ability to facilitate and encourage collaboration with other academic disciplines and to foster a broad research portfolio that encompasses the many dimensions of mathematical and statistical sciences, as well as:
  • An earned doctorate in the mathematical or statistical sciences or a related field
  • Leadership and administrative experience
  • Demonstrated strong management, communication, and advocacy skills
  • A commitment to undergraduate and graduate education
  • A commitment to fostering interdisciplinary research
  • Experience in fostering growth of a research program
  • Research and teaching interests that align with SMS
  • A record of peer-reviewed publications and externally funded research
  • Qualifications consistent with the rank of tenured full professor
  • Ability to contribute in meaningful ways to the university’s continuing commitment to cultural diversity, pluralism, and individual differences
