The Mathematical Institute of Leiden University invites applicants for a PhD position with David Holmes in algebraic geometry. You are likely to end up working on a problem somewhere around enumerative and/or logarithmic geometry. You will be joining an active and growing group around enumerative and log geometry, with 3 other PhD candidates and 1-2 postdocs working on closely related topics, within a larger group in Leiden specialising in algebra, geometry and number theory. We run a lot of local reading groups, as well as taking part in national algebraic geometry seminars. The position comes with some light teaching duties.

Conditions of employment
We offer a full-time appointment of initially one year, with an extension after a positive evaluation of the progress of the research, personal capabilities and compatibility. The appointment will be extended for another three years for PhD candidates (salary range from € 2.443,- to € 3.122,- gross per month; pay scale P in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities). Leiden University offers an attractive benefits package with additional holiday (8%) and end-of-year bonuses (8.3 %), training and career development. Our individual choices model gives you some freedom to assemble your own set of terms and conditions. Candidates from outside the Netherlands may be eligible for a substantial tax break.

Teaching
