The Organization

At Thrive Scholars, our goal is to see talented low-income students of color develop inter-generational wealth and financial security, and become the diverse corporate, civic, and academic leaders our country so desperately needs.

Our comprehensive, data-driven, high-touch program model focuses on the key inflection points that can be the difference between just graduating from any college, and graduating from a top college with the grades, degree, career skills, and network needed to thrive in any career. Over our six-year program, Scholars benefit from admissions and intensive academic preparation before college and a comprehensive set of academic, personal, social-emotional, financial, and career supports throughout college.

The Program

As rising high school seniors and rising college first-years, students attend our six-week Summer Academy. At its core, Summer Academy is an academic boot camp where students learn the quantitative and writing skills they need to excel in college and in their preferred majors, with additional time devoted to personal and professional development topics. Summer Academy is a residential program held on the campuses of Amherst College and the University of Chicago. This year, we expect to serve 500+ students. We will also continue to monitor COVID developments in order to determine whether a residential program is safe and feasible, or if we will need to pivot to a virtual program as we did in 2020 and 2021.

The Position

We are seeking a Math Professor to teach one Calculus-series section (sections range from pre-calc to multivariable calculus) of approximately 20-25 students, at the University of Chicago from June 29 to August 9. The section is focused on helping our Scholars further develop the math skills they will need to excel in calculus-based courses at a selective college. The course will meet between 12-15 hours per week, and will include a combination of professor-led instruction and opportunities for students to engage in hands-on and collaborative work.

The Math Professor will be supported by two Assistant Instructors, who may be undergraduate students, graduate students, or college faculty that the Math Professor selects, with approval from Thrive Scholars staff. The Professor and Assistant Instructors are expected to be present for the entirety of the course time each day, and available for a minimum of 2 hours of office hours during the week.

The Math Professor will be expected to participate in an orientation and in course planning before the program begins.

Salary: The Math Professor will be paid $15,000 and the Assistant Instructors will be paid between $4.5K (for undergraduate students) and $6K (for graduate students) for the Summer.

Housing: Room and board will be provided, and covered by Thrive Scholars, for non-local faculty and assistant instructors.

The Ideal Candidate:

Experience teaching calculus-based course in a selective college setting required Experience teaching and engaging high school students Passion for and experience in working with a diverse, underserved community of high school and rising college students
