The Clemson School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences (SMSS) seeks to fill one Postdoctoral position, starting in the Summer 2023 semester. This is a 12-month position beginning June 1, 2023 with job duties consisting of conducting experimental and mathematical research. Candidates must have received their Ph.D. in mathematics or a related field within 4 years of June 2023.

The postdoctoral candidate must be interested in the fields of computational biology, applied mathematics, and interdisciplinary scholarship across bioengineering and statistics. The appointment is initially for one year but is renewable for one additional year contingent upon funding and performance. This position is funded by the Clemson R-Initiatives (CU FELLOWS) to work on a specific interdisciplinary project. The preferred candidate should have a strong background in probability, mathematical modeling, and programming skills.

The postdoc will complete experimental research to quantify endosomal escape after successful peptide delivery of bioactive siRNAs into ovarian cancer cells. The postdoctoral research aims to: 1) develop computationally efficient models, methods, and optimization techniques to quantify endosomal escape of siRNAs in cancer cells, 2) validate the proposed models on experimental data collected by using novel fluorescent microscopy methods on experiments of peptide endosome escape, and 3) develop packages to make the models available for a wide array of applications of population dynamics in gene delivery. The postdoc will receive laboratory training and will assume general responsibility for scientific operations in the lab.

Applications must include a cover letter, curriculum vitae, research statement, teaching statement, unofficial graduate transcripts, and three letters of reference addressing research competence. Applicants will have two research mentors. The candidate will work under the direction of primary research mentor Dr. Keisha Cook in the SMSS. The secondary mentor will be Dr. Angela Alexander-Bryant in the Department of Bioengineering. Applications must be completed through apply.interfolio.com/106276 and will be accepted until the position has been filled. Rolling submissions accepted until April 1, 2023.

The SMSS contains two divisions: Mathematics and Statistics & Operations Research, and includes the areas of algebra and discrete mathematics, data science, computational mathematics, operations research, probability and mathematical statistics, and pure and applied analysis. The school offers the full range of Baccalaureate, Master’s, and Doctoral degrees. Clemson University has the highest Carnegie research designation (Very High, R1), and recently completed its Clemson Forward plan with strategic focus on advancing our doctoral programs and strengthening our research and scholarly impact while still preserving the outstanding signature undergraduate experience that is at the heart of Clemson. The Clemson Forward plan directed the building of a new world-class College of Science that harnesses the disciplines of Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Genetics and Biochemistry, Mathematical and Statistical Sciences, and Physics & Astronomy to solve tomorrow’s greatest challenges. Clemson Forward has at its core the mission of inclusive excellence in our students and faculty that will help Clemson ascend to a top 20 public university and a model for the 21st Century land grant university.

Moreover, the University, the College of Science, and the School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences are committed to building a community of inclusive excellence, where faculty scholars are dedicated to working and teaching in a multi-cultural environment (http://www.clemson.edu/inclusion/). We are particularly interested in receiving applications from women, underrepresented minorities, and from those who have experience and/or a commitment toward mentoring students from diverse backgrounds, as well as those who have demonstrated a commitment to understanding the challenges in promoting diversity and inclusion. In addition, the college is supportive of the needs of dual career couples.

South Carolina’s highest-ranked national university is located at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains and surrounded by Lake Hartwell and the Clemson Experimental Forest.
