The Department of Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics at Umeå University is offering a postdoctoral scholarship within the project computational methods for wave propagation in heterogeneous media. The scholarship is full-time for two years with starting date 1 September, 2022 or by agreement. Wave propagation arises in a wide range of applications in science and engineering. In many realistic models in 2D and 3D, the material properties are heterogeneous and vary rapidly in space. The mathematical model is a hyperbolic partial differential equation with highly oscillatory coefficient. Numerical simulation of wave propagation in such models is challenging because of the high computational cost, which can be addressed by using a multiscale technique. The central aim of this project is a multiscale method in the finite element framework for wave propagation problems in highly oscillatory media. This is a very active research area that involves modeling, mathematical analysis, and computer implementation. The appointed postdoc will have the opportunity to focus on this field in collaboration with the computational mathematics group at Umeå University as well as external collaborators. Umeå offers excellent working and living conditions. The city is young and located right next to a large river. It is surrounded by forests and lakes and lies close by the sea. In the vicinity there are plenty of opportunities for both indoor and outdoor activities.
