The Department of Applied Physics and Applied Mathematics (APAM) at Columbia University invites applicants for a Postdoctoral Research Scientist position in severe convective storm risk at its Morningside campus in New York City.

The main goal of the project is to provide monthly, ENSO-conditioned, and climate change views of North American severe convective storm risk. For this purpose, the successful applicant will apply statistical and machine learning approaches to storm reports, reanalysis, and model data. In addition, the Postdoctoral Research Scientist will be expected to lead peer-reviewed publications and present their results at scientific meetings and with industry sponsors.

Appointment is full-time for a two-year period. Appointment is made annually and is contingent upon funding and performance.

Qualifications

Required A Ph.D. in Physics, Atmospheric Science, Climate Science, or a directly related discipline Knowledge of basic statistics including linear regression Strong Python coding skills Strong verbal and written communication skills

Preferred Knowledge of severe convective storms (thunderstorms producing tornadoes, large hail, or damaging straight-line winds) and related severe weather parameters. Experience in analysis of climate change and climate variability, especially ENSO. Experience with statistical/mathematical analysis, visualization, and handling of large CMIP6, observational or forecast datasets, especially using cloud storage.
