The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science invites applications for a

Professorship (W2) in Mathematical Optimization

to be filled at the earliest possible date.

The successful applicant (m/f/d) is expected to strengthen the research priorities of the De-partment of Mathematics and Computer Science by establishing an independent research group and to actively participate in research alliances and existing collaborative research initiatives of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science as well as in the overall research priori-ties of the University of Marburg.

We are looking for a highly qualified, internationally visible scientist with outstanding scientific achievements and an independent scientific profile that demonstrates the potential for a further successful career in science at the highest international level. The person to be appointed should be an expert in a modern applied field of mathematical optimization (for example: optimization in machine learning, optimal control with ordinary or partial differential equations, parameter identification, model order reduction or shape optimization). There is a particular interest in areas that establish cross-references between existing research groups and strengthen the scientific network within the department. The person should be highly motivated to cooperate with other faculties of the University of Marburg and should be interested in research with relevance to applications. Experience in initiating, acquiring and carrying out third-party funded projects is required.

The professorship is responsible for providing coursework in the areas of expertise mentioned above, especially discrete and continuous optimization. In addition, the individual is expected to participate in the basic mathematics education of students in the bachelor’s and master’s programs of the department as well as in the training of secondary school teachers in mathematics, business mathematics, and data science. Here, the study programs business mathematics and data science will be the focus of teaching.

The conditions of employment are subject to § 67 and § 68 Hessisches Hochschulgesetz (HessHG). The successful candidate will be expected to teach in German after a maximum of two years of employment. The University of Marburg places great importance on the intensive mentoring of students and doctoral candidates; therefore, a regular presence of the teaching staff is required.
