Visiting Assistant Professor of Mathematics – One Year Appointment (2022-2023)

Gettysburg College invites applications for a full-time Visiting Assistant Professor position in mathematics for the 2022-2023 academic year. Gettysburg College celebrates diversity and particularly invites applications from members of any group that has been historically underrepresented in the American academy.

Applicants must have earned a master’s degree or a Ph.D. in one of the mathematical sciences or mathematics education; Ph.D. is preferred, and ABD candidates will be considered. The following are essential: (i) demonstrated success as a teacher, with clear promise of future excellent and innovative teaching in undergraduate mathematics; (ii) an interest in working as a teacher in a liberal arts environment. In addition, preference will be given to candidates with (iii) clear potential to integrate their teaching with the promotion of a campus environment in which underrepresented students will thrive.

The responsibilities of the position are to teach six courses during the academic year, likely including courses from the calculus sequence and/or introductory statistics. Depending on the qualifications and interests of the person hired, the teaching assignment might also include real analysis, upper-level probability/statistics, or both; candidates interested in teaching these latter two courses should express this interest explicitly in their cover letter. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to influence the mathematics program of an energetic department and to involve students in a variety of mathematical activities outside the classroom. While there are no active research expectations associated with this position, the department values and encourages scholarship. Funds to support scholarly activity will be available.

Please submit a cover letter with your application that briefly describes the aspects of this particular position that you find attractive and some specific ways that you hope to contribute to our program. Your cover letter should also succinctly address any respects in which you fulfill criteria (i)—(iii) listed above but that are not clearly presented elsewhere in your application materials. In addition, please submit a curriculum vitae, a brief description of your teaching methods and objectives, and up to three letters of recommendation addressing teaching effectiveness through mathjobs.org. Review of applications will begin May 23, 2022 and will continue until the position is filled. Inquiries can be addressed to Professor Beth Campbell Hetrick (bcampbel@gettysburg.edu), Chair, Mathematics Department.
