The position UiT The Arctic University of Norway has a Postdoctoral Research Fellow position vacant from 01.12.2022. The position is attached to the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, and the reserach group in Algebra. The position is a fixed term position for a duration of two years, with a possibility of extending by one more year subject to complementary teaching responsibilities. Appointment to the position of Postdoctoral Research Fellow is mainly intended to provide qualification for work in top academic positions. It is a prerequisite that the applicant can carry out the project over the full course of the employment period. No person may hold more than one fixed term position as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the same institution. The workplace is at UiT in Tromsø. You must be able to start in the position within a reasonable time after receiving the offer. The position’s affiliation The Faculty of Science and Technology consists of the following departments: Department of Chemistry, Department of Computer Science, Department of Engineering and Safety, Department of Geology, Department of Mathematics and Statistics, and Department of Physics and Technology. The position is at the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. The Department of Mathematics and Statistics is a leading research department in algebraic geometry, differential geometry, complex systems modeling, and climate science. It provides education at the bachelor, master, and Ph.D. levels. Around 50 people are employed in the department, at the moment there are 21 PhD positions and 3 postdoctoral positions at the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. The position's field of research The position will be attached to the project “UiT Aurora Center for Mathematical Structures in Computations” (MASCOT) funded by the UiT Aurora Centers initiative. The MASCOT Center aims to unify and advance research frontiers in the interplay of pure mathematics and computations by exploring fundamental mathematical structures and their increasing significance for modern algorithms and novel program architectures. The focus of research will be on novel possibilities to explore the algebraic and geometric nature of computational complexity, and analyze structural methods to reduce this complexity, as well as to adapt these methods to concrete applications in optimization, control theory, and robotics More concretely, the announced position will be attached to a work package on optimization of computations via algebraic and combinatorial approaches to complexity. Here the research will center around mathematical structures that are fundamental for efficient computations, in particular, on the role of symmetry to facilitate and structure computational processes. Applicants must submit a project proposal that describes how they scientifically can contribute to the MASCOT project.
