THE DEPARTMENT: The Department of Mathematics at CSUEB offers Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees that include a variety of courses intended to prepare students for a career in any mathematics related field or other areas that value quantitative and problem-solving skills. The program allows flexibility in breadth and depth where students can choose among courses with applied and pure emphases. The faculty are committed to creating a welcoming environment and providing opportunities for all students to explore mathematics within and beyond the classroom. DUTIES OF THE POSITION: The Department of Mathematics at CSU East Bay is seeking a tenure track faculty member to help increase the number of underrepresented minority students in STEM fields, to teach undergraduate and graduate level courses in applied mathematics from a computational viewpoint, including courses in mathematical modeling and data science, and to engage students in applied mathematics research. In addition, we seek a colleague who is versed in Active Learning -- a pedagogical approach that plays a key role in our curriculum, which is designed to support all incoming students regardless of academic preparation. We have faculty who are active in grant funded curriculum design and research to support student success at all levels of mathematics and the successful candidate will be expected to engage in this important work. An applicant needs the ability to 1. Teach a broad range of courses required for the mathematics major, both upper and lower division, especially courses that include topics that use numerical methods, such as numerical analysis, optimization, and/or differential equations. 2. Meaningfully contribute to the University and Departmental mission of supporting the diverse East Bay student body via rich, culturally relevant, learning experiences and community building. 3. Engage students in research experiences in applied computational mathematics and expose them to new and relevant areas of mathematics. 4. Be actively engaged in and sustain an applied mathematics research program, which can include writing internal and external grant proposals, and service on state and national committees and professional organizations. 5. Model research-based, inclusive, pedagogy by using a variety of innovative and proven pedagogical approaches including the use of technology.
