The Department of Mathematics in the Faculty of Science at Western University is pleased to announce a search for a faculty position in any area of Mathematics. Successful applicants will be appointed at the rank of Assistant Professor (Probationary (tenure-track)), Associate Professor (Probationary (tenure-track) or with Tenure), or Full Professor with Tenure depending on qualifications and experience. The salary will be commensurate with the successful applicant’s qualifications and experience. The anticipated start date will be July 1, 2023.

This search will be limited to applicants from under-represented and historically excluded groups to ensure that our faculty complement better reflects the diversity of the student and public communities we serve. With the understanding that our pursuit of research excellence and our commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion are mutually supporting, the Department of Mathematics especially welcomes applications from women, Indigenous scholars, members of racialized communities, and other equity-deserving groups. The successful applicant must have a demonstrated capacity to contribute substantively to an inclusive and diverse academic community. Applicants must possess a PhD in Mathematics or a closely related area. Applicants from all areas of mathematics and applied mathematics are encouraged to apply.

The successful candidate will have an outstanding record of research in the form of publications in high-impact, peer-reviewed journals, as well as awards, invited talks and other scholarly achievements, as appropriate for their career path and stage. Success in attracting external research funding would be an asset.

The successful candidate will also be expected to contribute to teaching and research supervision at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Demonstrated effectiveness in teaching and mentorship as well as experience and/or interest in curriculum development will be considered strong assets.

The successful candidate will also be expected to engage in service to the University and to the profession. Effective communication and interpersonal skills, as well as evidence of leadership potential, will be considered strong assets.

All applicants to this position must self-identify as belonging to an under-represented equity-deserving group within their cover letter. Because this is a special opportunity restricted to self-identified equity-deserving candidates, applicant self-identification information will be used for the purposes of screening and consideration. Please note that this information will be securely accessed only by members of a search committee and, for successful applicants, for the fulfillment of hiring purpose(s). This particular search process follows the provisions for a special program as described in Section 14 of the Ontario Human Rights Commission in order to address the underrepresentation of academics from historically-excluded groups among our faculty complement.

The Department of Mathematics is part of the School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences at Western. The School is home to over 40 research faculty whose interests range over various areas of mathematics and its applications, as well as statistics and actuarial science.

A complete application consists of:

● Cover letter, addressing how the candidate’s expertise complements existing research interests within the Department of Mathematics, as well as their self-identification as a member of an equity-deserving group

● Curriculum vitae

● Research statement

● A teaching portfolio, including documentation of experience and effectiveness, as well as an optional statement of teaching philosophy

● Four or more letters of reference, one of which should specifically address the candidate’s teaching

● Completed application form, found at https://www.uwo.ca/facultyrelations/pdf/full-time-application-form.pdf

Applications will be received via mathjobs.org (link to be provided). Western recognizes the potential impact that career interruptions can have on a candidate’s record of research achievement and potential candidates are encouraged to explain within their application the impact that career interruptions have had.

Consideration of applications will begin on October 24, 2022 and continue until the position is filled. We thank all applicants for their interest, but only those selected for an interview will be contacted.

Please note effective September 7, 2021, all employees and visitors to campus are required to comply with Western’s COVID-19 Vaccination Policy.

Positions are subject to budget approval. Applicants should have fluent written and oral communication skills in English. The University invites applications from all qualified individuals. Western is committed to employment equity and diversity in the workplace and welcomes applications from women, members of racialized groups, Indigenous peoples, persons with disabilities, persons of any sexual orientation, and persons of any gender identity or gender expression.

With annual research funding exceeding $220 million, and an international reputation for success, Western ranks as one of Canada's top research-intensive universities. Our research excellence expands knowledge and drives discovery with real-world application. Western also provides an exceptional employment experience, offering competitive salaries, a wide range of employment opportunities and one of Canada's most beautiful campuses.

In accordance with Canadian immigration requirements, Canadian citizens and permanent residents will be given priority.
