Lectureship/Readership in Technology Enhanced Mathematics Education

Grade UE08

Salary - £42,149 - £50,296 per annum

Full time, open ended

The School of Mathematics wishes to appoint a Lecturer in Technology Enhanced Mathematics Education (equivalent to Assistant Professor) to start on 1 Jan 2023 or later by agreement. Applicants with significant experience and a suitably strong record of achievement may be appointed to a Readership (equivalent to Associate Professor).

The Technology Enhanced Mathematical Sciences Education research theme covers a broad spectrum of educational research within higher education mathematics, statistics and data science. We focus on assessment in higher education and on the development and use of technology, including the development of the STACK online assessment system (https://stack-assessment.org/). The theme has 15 academic staff and runs a regular seminar on pedagogy and teaching in the mathematical sciences and also the School’s Teaching Café.

We are looking for ambitious researchers to enhance or complement our existing strengths, who are self-starting, and have a keen interest in enhancing education in mathematics, statistics or operational research through pedagogical research and the effective use of technology. We are seeking candidates with a track record of high-quality research in relevant areas. We are particularly interested in applicants with the ability to contribute to research in online assessment and HE assessment more generally, but strong potential in other areas such of mathematics education may be given serious consideration.

As well as carrying out high-quality research, the successful candidate will contribute to the teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate courses. The role will also include the supervision of student projects and involvement in assessment of students, helping to develop courses, and teaching-related administration. The School takes career development very seriously, and will provide appropriately tailored mentoring in both research and teaching.

A PhD in Mathematical Sciences (or a closely related discipline) and some experience of relevant teaching at University level is essential, as well as being able to demonstrate independence, effective team working, good communication and interpersonal skills.

Salary Scale: £42,149 - £50,296 per annum. Very strong and experienced applicants may be appointed to a Readership, for which the salary is in the range £52,559 - £59,135.

Please ensure that your application includes an up-to-date CV, research statement and teaching statement, and in addition that three references are sent to references@maths.ed.ac.uk by the closing date.

Informal enquiries may be made to Professor Chris Sangwin via C.J.Sangwin@ed.ac.uk
