The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at Wesleyan University invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professorship in mathematics to begin July 1, 2023.

We seek strong candidates whose research interests are in applied mathematics, broadly construed, and which are compatible with the existing research interests of the department. Relevant areas include – but are very much not limited to – applied topology, algebraic statistics and computational algebraic geometry, cryptography and computational number theory, computational combinatorics, discrete and computational geometry, optimization, and stochastic processes. Exceptional candidates in any field compatible with the research interests of the faculty are also encouraged to apply.

Wesleyan University is a leading liberal arts school with approximately 3000 students, located halfway between Boston and New York and also halfway between Hartford and New Haven. The university has graduate programs leading to doctoral and master’s degrees in the sciences and ethnomusicology. The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science awards the Ph.D. degree in Mathematics, and the MA degrees in Mathematics as well as Computer Science. There are 13 mathematicians and 7 computer scientists in the department, not including visitors and postdocs, as well as approximately 17 graduate students. The low student to faculty ratio ensures close contact between faculty and graduate students. Wesleyan values both scholarship and teaching very highly, has a strong, diverse undergraduate student body, and offers a substantial startup package, a generous sabbatical program, and competitive salaries and benefits.

Teaching duties will be two courses in each semester, typically including a graduate-level course. Additional duties include advising and mentoring students, and participating in faculty governance at the departmental and university levels.

We welcome applications from women and members of historically underrepresented groups. Inquiries regarding Title IX, Section 504, or any other nondiscrimination policies should be directed to: Vice President for Equity & Inclusion/Title IX Officer, 318 North College, 860.685.4771

Applications completed by Oct 1, 2022 will receive full consideration, though the search will remain open until the position is filled. A complete application must include a cover letter, curriculum vitae, research statement, teaching statement, and at least four letters of recommendation, one of which evaluates the candidate’s teaching. In the cover letter, applicants should describe how they will embrace the college’s commitment to fostering an inclusive community, as well as their experience working with individuals from historically marginalized or underserved groups. A Ph.D. or equivalent degree in mathematics is required by the time of appointment to be hired as an Assistant Professor; a successful candidate may be hired as an Instructor if the candidate does not have a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in hand at the time of appointment, but will have the degree within one year of hire. Applications must be submitted online at mathjobs.org. Please contact David Pollack at dpollack@wesleyan.edu with any questions about the application process.
