Washington & Jefferson College (“W&J”) invites applications for a tenure track position on the faculty at the assistant professor level, beginning Fall 2023, with primary area of responsibility in the Department of Mathematics. As a leading national liberal arts college, W&J believes that students learn best in a supportive and inclusive environment and that they should be encouraged to make connections across their courses of study. Our small class sizes (faculty to student ratio is about 1:9) provide the opportunity to foster a passion for learning and for making those connections. Interdisciplinary activities by students and faculty alike are encouraged, and many students pursue dual majors, international experiences, or independent study. Interdisciplinary opportunities for faculty include, but are not limited to, teaching First-Year Seminar, Gender & Women’s Studies, and courses in the January term.

At W&J, we teach and encourage students from diverse backgrounds, including first-generation college students, international students, students with varying mathematical preparation, and students from groups that are underrepresented in mathematics.

Our department manages an endowed fund with which we support research, travel, and conference participation for both faculty and students. This fund also finances academic expenses for faculty, such as membership dues and other scholarly pursuits.

We seek candidates who

• Are enthusiastic and adaptable teacher-scholars who will match the passion about teaching and scholarship already present in our department and will prioritize student success.

• Value meaningful and fulfilling teaching experiences.

• Want the support and freedom to be innovative in the classroom.

Requirements for the position are

• Willingness to teach at all levels of the undergraduate curriculum in mathematics, with interest in developing new directions for undergraduate students.

• Willingness to direct students’ independent mathematical investigations and strong commitment to advising and mentoring students.

• An earned doctorate in the mathematical sciences or allied fields by the start of appointment. All subject areas will be considered.

• Commitment to diversity and inclusion in the classroom with preference for those whose academic or service interests demonstrate this value.

Applicants should submit a letter of interest, three letters of recommendation, an unofficial graduate transcript, curriculum vitae, and a teaching statement that specifically addresses teaching at a small undergraduate liberal arts college. In this statement the applicant should also address how they plan to pursue their scholarly interests in such an environment. Application materials should explain the candidate’s ideas and experience regarding support and recruitment of students from underrepresented groups. At least one letter of recommendation should specifically address teaching experience. All material should be submitted through mathjobs.org. Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until December 1st, 2022. Washington & Jefferson College is located about 30 miles south west of vibrant Pittsburgh, PA. Full-time faculty course load is 6 courses per year. Equal Opportunity Employer Washington & Jefferson College (W&J) is committed to increasing diversity in our community and actively pursues individuals from all backgrounds. Additionally, W&J College complies with all applicable federal, state and local laws and provides equal opportunity in all educational programs and activities, admission of students and conditions of employment for all qualified individuals regardless of race, color, sexual orientation, protected veteran status, gender identity, or national origin.
