Position Announcement: Director, Online Program in Data Science/Term Faculty Department of Mathematics and Statistics, Data Science Program College of Arts and Sciences American University

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics Data Science Program invites applications for a Director of the Online Program in Data Science/Term Faculty from January 2023 to August 2025. This is a non-tenure track position, and the final rank will be dependent on experience and stature in the field. The appointment will commence on January 1, 2023 and is renewable thereafter. The position will be in the College of Arts and Sciences at American University.

Qualifications: Applicants must hold a minimum of a master’s degree (PhD preferred) in the field of data science, statistics, applied mathematics or a closely related field, demonstrate strong leadership, organizational, marketing, and financial management skills and possess a record of excellence in graduate-level teaching and/or success in the data science workforce. Candidates must demonstrate collegiality and dedication to service within the department and college. Experience in developing, launching, or operating successful online degree programs is highly desirable.

Responsibilities: The Program Director leads the development, launch, and management of an online program for awarding a Master of Science in data science from American University. The successful candidate also serves as a term faculty member within the data science program and the department, with teaching and service responsibilities. The Program Director for the Online Program has specific responsibilities to:

• Provide vision and leadership for the online program to create, sustain, and grow a program that offers a high-quality online learning experience using a blend of asynchronous and synchronous learning. • Work with leadership and staff from the data science program, the department, the college, and the university to finalize the development of the program, launch the program, and manage the program to meet academic and financial goals each year within the allocated budgets. • Develop and implement plans for each semester to schedule courses, oversee the development of specialized curricula, and coordinate courses and course sections within the department. • Recruit, assist with hiring, and develop faculty dedicated to the program. Monitor the performance of all faculty teaching in the program. • Coordinate with the residential program directors, department chairs, and deans to ensure the program meets academic standards. Lead the annual program assessment process. • Coordinate with marketing and recruitment staff to recruit students. • Serve as academic advisor for program students. • Coordinate with the Office of the Chief Online Officer to integrate the program into AU-wide programs and initiatives while leveraging available resources for program and course development. • Teach two graduate data science courses within the program per Fall semester and one per Spring semester during the first two years. The course load beyond the third year will be subject to enrollments and the state of the program. All faculty are expected to hold office hours and participate in School and University activities and service.
