Position Description
Department of Mathematical Sciences (DMS) This is an exciting opportunity to join the Department of Mathematical Sciences (DMS). The Department is a growing and vibrant department in the Faculty of Science and Health. DMS is internationally known for its research in a range of areas and offers an excellent education to its students. The Department is looking to appoint a Lecturer, Senior Lecturer or Reader in Statistics or Statistical Data Science to be a part of the department expansion strategy to improve its research profile in statistics and data science, and the provision of statistics and data science teaching and learning. The post is open to all areas of statistics, such as statistical learning, artificial intelligence, computational statistics, Bayesian statistics, applied statistical modelling and mathematical statistics. The post may include teaching on our actuarial science, data science and statistics courses at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level. This may include delivering statistics, data science, or actuarial science modules with existing lecture materials and developing new master level modules. It will also include supervising Statistics and Data Science master/PhD students. The research of the department is structured in several research themes in different areas of Data Science and Mathematics. The successful candidates are expected to contribute to the Research Theme of Statistical Methodology or the Research Theme of Statistical Learning. We wish to add capability to the Department’s existing research in this area as well as open up and develop new research activities that will become recognized as outstanding and internationally leading. Of special interests are machine learning, artificial intelligence, Bayesian computational statistics, causal inference and biostatistics and statistical interface with big data and data privacy applications. Duties will include designing, planning and delivering learning across a range of modules or within subject area, assess and feed back to learners, supervise student projects, fieldwork and placements, engaging successfully and effectively in substantive teaching and generating research income appropriate in scale to career stage. At Senior Lecturer and Reader level you will make significant research-led and pedagogically informed contributions to module/curriculum design and development. To be successful you will have a strong research profile in publishing in internationally leading mainstream journals to contribute to the next REF submission under the mathematical science panel or have a potential to develop a strong research profile, along with a relevant doctoral level research degree in statistics or data science or related discipline or equivalent professional experience or practice or be close to completion of a PhD. You should also have experience of designing and planning learning activities developing effective learning environments and approaches to student support and guidance. A full list of duties and the person specifications can be found within the relevant job packs attached (Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, Reader).
