The Department of Mathematical and Computational Sciences at the University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM) invites applications for a full-time teaching stream appointment in Mathematics. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream, and will commence on July 1, 2023, or shortly thereafter. Candidates must have
earned a PhD in Mathematics by the time of appointment or shortly thereafter
with a strong record of excellent teaching, an intellectual curiosity to pursue
novel and innovative methods of thinking and teaching, and an interest in
establishing a long-term teaching career in the Department. Candidates’
teaching interests should complement and enhance our existing departmental
strengths (https://www.utm.utoronto.ca/math-cs-stats/home). Candidates must have teaching expertise in a degree-granting
program at the undergraduate program level, including lecture preparation and
delivery, curriculum development and development of online material/lectures.
Additionally, candidates must possess a demonstrated commitment to excellent
pedagogical practices and a demonstrated interest in teaching-related scholarly
activities. Successful
candidates must have strong endorsements from referees of high standing,
demonstrating both excellent teaching and evidence of commitment to pedagogical
enquiry and teaching innovation. Evidence of excellence in teaching will also
be demonstrated through teaching accomplishments, and the teaching dossier,
including a teaching statement, sample syllabi, and teaching evaluations,
submitted as part of the application. Teaching duties in
the undergraduate program may include core courses at the first and/or second
year level, as well as upper-level courses, in one of the candidate's fields of
expertise. Responsibilities may include undergraduate teaching, managing
teaching assistants, developing course materials, and curriculum development.
In addition, each faculty member may have some responsibility for student
recruitment and departmental administration. Salary will be
commensurate with qualifications and experience. At UTM we are
committed to fostering an environment of diversity and inclusion. With an
enviable diverse student body, we especially welcome applications from
candidates who identify as Indigenous, Black, or racially visible (persons of
colour), and who have experience working with teaching or mentoring diverse
groups or students. Candidates must demonstrate, in their application
materials, an ability to foster diversity on campus and within the curriculum
or discipline, and must show evidence of a commitment to equity, diversity,
inclusion, and the promotion of a respectful and collegial environment.
Candidates must submit a statement describing their contributions to equity,
diversity, and inclusion, which might cover topics such as (but not limited
to): teaching that incorporates a focus on underrepresented communities;
efforts undertaken to develop inclusive pedagogies, collaboration, and
engagement with underrepresented communities; and mentoring of students from
underrepresented groups. If you have questions about this statement, please
contact Professor Ilia Binder at ilia.binder@utoronto.ca. All qualified
candidates are invited to apply through MathJobs at https://www.mathjobs.org/jobs/list/21164. Applicants must submit a cover letter, curriculum
vitae, a statement describing contributions to equity,
diversity, and inclusion (as outlined above), a statement of career goals and a teaching dossier that includes
a teaching philosophy statement, course evaluations, and selected course
materials.
Applicants must
arrange to have at least three recent letters of recommendation (on letterhead,
dated and signed), uploaded through MathJobs directly by the writers by the
closing date. All application materials, including reference letters, must be
received by November 21, 2022. For additional enquiries,
please contact Julia Martyn, Chair’s Assistant, at julia.martyn@utoronto.ca. All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority.
