Numerica Corporation seeks new Ph.D. researchers to work on its research and development programs in information science. Numerica offers a rich working environment for highly talented, motivated individuals who wish to apply their scientific and technical background to the innovative solution of difficult problems in a team atmosphere. Numerica develops both algorithms and software for a variety of problems in information systems and science and related fields. Areas of Work include, but are not limited to probability theory, statistics, random processes, controls, dynamical systems, estimation theory, signal processing, combinatorial and continuous optimization, Bayesian networks, multiple target tracking, data fusion, sensor and communications resource management, distributed systems, GIS, chemical detection, numerical algorithms and their analysis, scientific computing, computer science, and software design and development using object oriented principles.

A research engineer/scientist at Numerica works on the development of algorithmic solutions to scientific and engineering problems using research and development from the Areas of Work. At Numerica, employees participate on small teams that conduct basic and applied research and development for both the US Government and commercial customers. While related experience is a plus, job-specific training will be provided by a member of Numerica’s senior technical staff for those with appropriate backgrounds, but who lack experience in our particular technical field.

REQUIREMENTS • Ph.D. or M.S. in Electrical Engineering, Controls and Dynamical Systems, Applied or Computational Mathematics, Physics, Statistics and Probability, Computer Science, Operations Research, or closely related field; • Graduate course work in one or more of the Areas of Work or closely related area; • Experience developing prototype algorithms in Matlab, Python, C++, or JAVA in a Unix environment; • US Citizenship. Successful applicants also should have a demonstrated ability, interest, and desire to learn new areas and to work on hard scientific and engineering problems. COMMUNICATION SKILLS Because the work environment at Numerica is highly collaborative, a successful candidate must have effective written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly communicate technical and programmatic details to both colleagues and customers. SECURITY REQUIREMENTS Because of the nature of the work performed by Numerica, all applicants must be capable of obtaining a US Security Clearance. At a minimum, this requires that a candidate be a US citizen and have a background such that sufficient trustworthiness can be established (e.g., clean criminal record, reasonable credit, no use of illegal drugs, etc).
