Position Description:

The Vanderbilt Department of Mathematics is seeking exceptional recent PhD recipients in Mathematics for an honorific postdoctoral fellowship program affiliated with the Vanderbilt Initiative for Gravity, Waves, and Fluids (VandyGRAF). This specific announcement is for two postdoctoral positions in Mathematics. In separate announcements linked below, there are up to four companion postdoctoral positions in the Vanderbilt Department of Physics & Astronomy.

The VandyGRAF Initiative is a new collaborative effort between Vanderbilt University's Departments of Mathematics and Physics & Astronomy to work on problems of outstanding scientific merit in general relativity, fluid mechanics, PDE theory, and nuclear physics. VandyGRAF hosts a weekly seminar series with diverse guests and open scientific discussion. Ideal candidates will be excited to contribute to this atmosphere of open inquiry and learn about fields adjacent to their own; see https://as.vanderbilt.edu/physics/gwaf/ for more information.

Two postdoctoral positions in Mathematics are available, with appointments to begin in academic year 2023-2024. The positions are for three years at the rank of Postdoctoral Scholar, carry the title of VandyGRAF Fellow, and have a teaching component of one course per academic year. Each VandyGRAF Fellow will be provided with yearly research funds to support their scientific endeavors.

Candidates from all relevant areas of research will be considered, with a particular focus on mathematical general relativity, fluid mechanics, hyperbolic PDE theory, and geometry. Successful candidates will be mentored by Profs. Marcelo Disconzi and Jared Speck.

In addition to the two Mathematics positions, up to four postdoctoral positions in the Vanderbilt Department of Physics & Astronomy are available:

• Up to two postdoctoral positions in gravitational theory and black hole physics are available in this separate announcement: https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/23567 ;
• Up to two postdoctoral positions in nuclear physics and relativistic heavy-ion collisions are available in this separate announcement: https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/23618 ;

Vanderbilt University is committed to recruiting an academically and culturally diverse community of exceptional faculty. Vanderbilt University is an equal opportunity, affirmative action employer. Women, minorities, people with disabilities and protected veterans are encouraged to apply.

To apply online to the Mathematics positions, please submit the following documents on MathJobs.org: cover letter, CV, research statement, and four recommendation letters, one of which should address teaching qualifications and potential for mentoring/leadership. To ensure full consideration, all materials, including letters of reference, must be received by December 15, 2022.
