FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

The Department of Mathematics at the College of Staten Island invites applications for two Lecturer lines starting Fall 2023.

The successful candidates are expected to:

  • Teach courses at all undergraduate curriculum levels, including a range of 100 level courses (quantitative reasoning, statistics, algebra, precalculus)
  • Engage, guide, and mentor students inside and outside of the math classroom 
  • Actively contribute to curriculum and pedagogy development 
  • Participate in departmental, College, and University committees and other service

The successful candidates shall have demonstrated enthusiasm and success with teaching and curriculum development and will be joining a department with high impact research in pure and applied mathematics. This includes fostering undergraduate research participation at all levels, including in various exciting interdisciplinary fields. The College of Staten Island (CSI) serves about 10,000 students who represent the diversity of New York City and the Borough of Staten Island. CSI's internationally recognized faculty passionately engage in scholarly and artistic activities, and together with a strong professional staff, lead students through transformational learning experiences both inside and outside of the classroom. The College is situated on a 204-acre site with residential housing and is a hub of intellectual and artistic activity and a community partner and source of economic impact and job creation for the greater Staten Island area.

The Lecturer position is eligible for a Certificate of Continuing Employment after five years. Although the Lecturer position has no requirement of research publications, it is expected, by our research active department, that successful candidates will demonstrate mathematical interest outside of teaching responsibilities.

The lecturer lines are part of a CUNY-wide effort to increase faculty diversity.

Affiliation with either https://minoritymath.org/ or https://www.nam-math.org/ will be considered favorably by the hiring committee.

QUALIFICATIONS

Ph.D. degree in area of experience or equivalent. Also required are the ability to teach successfully, demonstrated scholarship or achievement, and ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution.

Preferred qualifications include:

  • Ph. D. in Mathematics or advanced graduate study.
  • Experience teaching a diverse student body, and familiarity with evidence-based teaching practices aimed at engaging students from all backgrounds.

COMPENSATION

$69,665 - $88,998

Salary commensurate with experience and credentials
