Department of Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics at Umeå University is offering a postdoctoral scholarship within the project “Functional- and point process-based approaches for trajectory data analysis”. The scholarship is full-time for two years, starting September 1, 2023, or upon agreement. Last day to apply is March 31, 2023.

Project description:

Spatial data sometimes come as a set of points, which are (ir)regularly distributed over a region of space, representing the location of events/things such as traffic accidents, crimes, earthquakes, etc. In practice, one usually deals with a single observed pattern or a collection of patterns which are considered to have been (independently) generated from the same process. However, modern data collection techniques allow tracking moving objects (e.g., cars, human beings, bicycles, animals) continuously. This means that we not only know the current location of a moving object, but also track such objects over time. Therefore, one deals with a set of curves, representing paths/routes taken by moving objects, which is called a trajectory pattern. The main aim of this project is to develop functional- and point process-based approaches for analyzing trajectory patterns. The developed approaches are expected to be accompanied by open-access codes/software.

The successful candidate will be based at the Department of Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics in Umeå and will be financed through a personal scholarship from the Kempe Foundations. The two-year scholarship will start from September 1, 2023, or upon agreement. The stipend is given 28 000 SEK/month (net).

Umeå offers excellent working and living conditions. The city is young and located right next to a large river. It is surrounded by forests and lakes and lies close by the sea. In the vicinity there are plenty of opportunities for both indoor and outdoor activities.
