The position A Postdoctoral Research Fellow position is available at the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, Faculty of Science and Technology.

The position is a fixed term position for a duration of two years. Appointment to the position of Postdoctoral Research Fellow is mainly intended to provide qualification for work in top academic positions. It is a prerequisite that the applicant can carry out the project over the full course of the employment period. No person may hold more than one fixed term position as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the same institution.

The Faculty of Science and Technology consists of the following departments: Department of Chemistry, Department of Computer Science, Department of Engineering and Safety, Department of Geology, Department of Mathematics and Statistics, and Department of Physics and Technology. The Department of Mathematics and Statistics is a leading research department in algebraic geometry, differential geometry, complex systems modeling, and climate science. It provides education at the bachelor, master, and Ph.D. levels. Around 50 people are employed in the department, at the moment there are 21 PhD positions and 3 postdoctoral positions at the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.

The workplace is at UiT in Tromsø. You must be able to start in the position within a reasonable time after receiving the offer.

The position's field of research The position will be attached to the project “UiT Aurora Center for Mathematical Structures in Computations” (MASCOT) funded by the UiT Aurora Centers initiative. The MASCOT project aims to unify and advance research frontiers in the interplay of computational and pure mathematics by exploring fundamental mathematical structures and their increasing significance for modern algorithms and novel program architectures, see https://uit.no/research/mascot for details. The research topics for this postdoc are in the borderland between coding theory, combinatorics, and algebra. Central topics are error-correcting codes and matroids, but also related topics like tropical and algebraic geometry are of importance. Good knowledge of mathematical software is an advantage. In the detailed planning of research activities, we will be flexible towards the background and interests of the candidate, however the work should address the objectives of the project.

Programming skills and proficiency in symbolic packages are desirable.

For appointment as Postdoctoral Fellow, the applicant is required to have a Norwegian doctoral degree in the subject area concerned or a corresponding foreign doctoral degree recognized as equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree. Qualification with a PhD is required before commencement in the position. If you’re at the final stages of your PhD, you may still apply if you have submitted your PhD thesis for doctoral degree evaluation within the application deadline. You must document this and submit the thesis with your application. You must have dissertated before the start-up date of the position.

Applicants must submit a 2-page project proposal for the qualifying work, which should be explicitly related to the activity within the project. This proposal shall include a progress plan. It is required that the applicant will be able to complete the project during the period of appointment.

Fluency in English is required.

Assessment The applicants will be assessed by an expert committee. The committee's mandate is to undertake an assessment of the applicants' qualifications based on the written material presented by the applicants, and the detailed description draw up for the position. In the assessment the main emphasis will be attached to the submitted works and the project proposal. Emphasis shall also be attached to experience from popularization/dissemination and academic policy and administrative activity.

The applicants who are assessed as best qualified will be called to an interview. The interview should among other things, aim to clarify the applicant’s motivation and personal suitability for the position. A trial lecture may also be held.

The remuneration for Postdoctoral research fellow is in accordance with the State salary scale code 1352. A compulsory contribution of 2 % to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund will be deducted.
