Position Description

The Mathematics Department at Hamline University (Saint Paul, MN) seeks applicants for a Visiting Faculty position to teach in the Mathematics and Computational Data Science Programs for the Academic Year 2023-2024.  We are particularly interested in applicants with experience and interest in teaching courses in computing and data science.  The initial appointment is for one year, with the possibility of renewal.

Our Mathematics Department aims to apply contemporary pedagogy to foster student success and build a welcoming community for majors and non-majors alike. We actively collaborate with each other to achieve these goals. We also work closely with colleagues in other fields, such as Physics, Biology, and Education, to provide a strong STEM education within the context of the liberal arts. Through their distributional requirements, Hamline students in the College of Liberal Arts take a course in the Math Department, providing us with a unique opportunity to touch nearly every education on campus. For our majors, we offer two Bachelor of Science degrees, one in Applied Mathematics and another in Computational Data Science.

The mission of Hamline University is to create a diverse and collaborative community of learners dedicated to the development of students' knowledge, values, and skills for successful lives of leadership, scholarship, and service. Hamline ranks highly in economic mobility for graduates. Our student body is reflective of the diverse community in the Twin Cities — approximately 40% of students receive Pell grants and this year’s incoming class included 44% students identifying as BIPOC and 47% first-generation college students. The Math Department is committed to serving all Hamline’s students, with a particular interest in equitable access for students with identities typically not invited into Mathematics and Data Science. We seek a colleague who will support this commitment.

The faculty member in this position will have the support and opportunities that Hamline provides for all new faculty. They will have access to professional development funds; and they will be invited to join the CLA Dean's New Faculty Seminar, which provides a year-long orientation to Hamline systems and processes as well as more general professional development. Within the math department, faculty members will have the opportunity to participate in community events (e.g. Math Tea), seminars, ongoing curricular design, and department-level assessment.

The course load for this position is a total of seven courses spread over the year. These courses could include introductory computing, statistics, or calculus as well as intermediate or advanced courses according to the expertise of the faculty member.  When assigning courses, we take into account faculty interests, goals, and workload. When desired, we can share previous course designs and materials.

The successful candidate will have:

The ideal candidate will also have experience and interest in teaching courses in computing and data science, a record of engagement with evidence-based pedagogy, and a willingness to mentor students through research and/or internships.

Candidates should submit

In addition, candidates will need to arrange for at least two (2) letters of reference to be submitted, at least one of which directly addresses your teaching in a classroom setting.

Applications received by March 20th, 2023, will receive full consideration and the position will remain open until filled. Questions may be addressed to math faculty members Katharine Adamyk at kadamyk01@hamline.edu and Jasper Weinburd at jweinburd@hamline.edu.
