The Department of Computer Science and Mathematics within the College of Science and Technology at Fairmont State University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position as an Assistant Professor of Mathematics with an anticipated start date of August 2023. Applicants should have a PhD in Mathematics awarded before or within one year of the start date. The department is particularly interested in applicants with a strong desire and ability to teach the entire range of mathematics course offerings from entry level co-requisite and general studies courses to calculus and upper-level math major courses. Duties of the position are to teach four classes per semester (12-14 credit hours), engage in service activities, pursue scholarly interests, provide mentorship and academic advising for mathematics majors, actively assess the mathematics program and all math courses, support CAEP accreditation for math education degrees, and interact collegially with faculty and staff. Scholarship is expected, and can take many forms, including mentoring undergraduate research projects.

The Fairmont State Mathematics program is housed in the Department of Computer Science and Mathematics. While it primarily focuses on the B.S. Mathematics major and the Mathematics Education programs, our program collaborates closely with the faculty and students of the Computer Science program. Many of our math students double major in math and computer science. The mathematics program faculty have diverse interests. Faculty frequently serve officers for regional and state math organizations, serve on state committees, and are regularly nominated for teaching awards. In the last 5 years, several mathematics faculty members have worked to secure undergraduate research grants a state grant and two NSF grants.

Fairmont State University is a comprehensive, student-centered, public teaching institution located in West Virginia’s High-Tech Corridor, which is approximately 90 minutes south of Pittsburgh. Nearly 90 percent of our students are native West Virginians, many of whom are first-generation college students.
