The University of New South Wales is seeking a full-time Lecturer/Senior Lecturer to conduct independent research and teach undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Pure Mathematics. The successful candidate will be expected to develop scholarly research in the research strengths of the School of Mathematics and Statistics, as well as contributing to teaching, research collaborations, and administrative duties. The role is a 5 year tenure-track position (can be converted to a continuing position subject to performance review) and is located in Sydney, Australia. Applicants must hold a PhD or equivalent qualification in relevant mathematics sciences, have a strong publication record, research funding experience, and effective teaching experience.

About the role

- Level B - $112K - $132K plus 17% Superannuation and annual leave loading

- Level C - $136k - $157k - plus 17% Superannuation and annual leave loading

- 5 years Convertible Tenure Track

- Full-time (35 hours per week)

The Lecturer/Senior Lecturer reports to the Head of Pure Mathematics.

Specific responsibilities for this role include:

LEVEL B – Lecturer:

- Actively carry out high quality and high impact research in the areas that align with the research strengths in the School with a view to publication in influential and high-impact scholarly journals.

- Work both collaboratively and independently on research grant proposals and applications to national competitive grant agencies and other funding bodies.

- Develop research collaborations within the School as well as links with other groups on campus and/or industry.

- Develop research collaborations nationally and internationally.

- Actively disseminate research findings at seminars and conferences within the School, the UNSW environment, nationally and internationally.

- High quality supervision of major honours and postgraduate research projects.

- Supervise Honours and Masters Course Work projects; and supervise PhD and Masters Research students.

- Deliver high quality teaching and student experience utilising sound pedagogical methodologies and innovative technologies and from time to time, deliver teaching across a broad science discipline, including

- Teaching mathematics courses to a range of audiences at the University.

- Teaching specialist Honours and Masters level courses.

- Contributing to the design and delivery of the School’s teaching programs and courses

- Actively participate in School activities and demonstrate an ability and willingness take on leadership roles in the School.

- Undertake administrative duties as specified by the Head of School and participate in School, Faculty and/or University committees as required.

- Actively engage with industry and the community to develop significant productive relationships, attract industry funding and participate in professional activities if required.

- Work collaboratively with peers across the Faculty and UNSW in all aspects of academic endeavour and contribute to mentoring of other staff.

- Align with and actively demonstrate the UNSW Values in Action: Our Behaviours and the UNSW Code of Conduct.

- Cooperate with all health and safety policies and procedures of the university and take all reasonable care to ensure that your actions or omissions do not impact on the health and safety of yourself or others.

- LEVEL C – Senior Lecturer:

(in addition to the above)

- Play a significant role in research projects including, where appropriate, leadership of a research team.

- Obtain research income from nationally competitive research grants (and/or research fellowships) and research end-users as a member or leader, at or above the level that is relevant to the discipline in leading universities.

- Apply critically reflective teaching practices and provide assessment and feedback at both course and program level.

- Attract peer recognition and establish research network/s at the international level.

About the successful applicant (Selection Criteria)

To be successful in this role you will have:

LEVEL B – Lecturer:

- PhD or equivalent qualification in relevant mathematics sciences

- Demonstrated research ability in an area of Pure Mathematics, which aligns with the research directions in the School.

- Evidence of effective teaching experience.

- Evidence of research group collaborations.

- Capacity to conduct productive research at an international level.

- Strong publication record in top, peer-reviewed journals.

- A record, or demonstrated ability, of success in external research funding.

- Ability to supervise PhD students.

- Experience in student supervision including, for example, Honours and Masters and vacation scholar projects.

- High level oral and written communication skills and ability to network effectively and interact with a diverse range of students and staff.

- Demonstrated ability and willingness to deliver high quality and innovative teaching and student experience to both undergraduate and postgraduate students.

- A track record of significant involvement with the profession and/or industry.

- Demonstrated ability to work in a team, collaborate across disciplines and build effective relationships.

- Willingness to undertake any compliance and supervisor training as required.

- An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.

- Ability and capacity to implement required UNSW health and safety policies and procedures.

LEVEL C – Senior Lecturer:

(in addition to the above)

- A substantial record of publications in top, peer-reviewed journals.

- Strong track record of successful postgraduate supervision.

- Strong dedication to independent research and research leadership.

- Demonstrated record of competitive external research funding

- Demonstrated experience in teaching and learning using a range of pedagogical approaches and educational technologies, development and delivery of courses and programs, at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level.

- Excellent leadership skills in community and professional engagement.
