The School of Mathematics wishes to appoint a Lecturer in Operational Research (first permanent position covering research, teaching and service responsibilities) to start on 1 September 2023 or later by agreement. Applicants with significant experience and a suitably strong record of achievement may be appointed to a Readership.

The Optimization and Operational Research Group in the School is an international leader in the mathematical and computing aspects of optimization and operational research as well as contemporary industrial applications of optimization. We have world-leading expertise in the solution of large sparse linear and quadratic problems by two of the core technologies in optimization - the simplex method and interior point methods. We also have a strong and growing presence in the mathematics of energy systems. Further interests include nonlinear and global optimization, discrete optimization, decomposition methods, parallel computing, stochastic optimization, simulation and stochastic areas of operational research. The group members collaborate with several research groups in the UK and overseas, and are actively engaged in collaborations with industry and government. We host the world-leading open source optimization software HiGHS (https://highs.dev) as well as an Operational Research Consultancy Unit that provides bespoke services and support for projects with external partners.

We are looking for ambitious researchers to enhance or complement these strengths, who are self-starting, and have a keen interest in operational research as part of the scientific process of figuring out how the modern world works. We are seeking candidates with a track record of high-quality research in areas relating to modern applications of operational research in areas such as, but not limited to, energy, healthcare, transportation, public and service sectors. Candidates are expected to have demonstrated ability to engage with industry and/or multidisciplinary partners.

As well as carrying out high-quality research, the successful candidate will contribute to the teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate courses, and to our successful MSc programmes in Operational Research. The role will also include the supervision of student projects and involvement in assessment of students, helping to develop courses and connect with industry where this is appropriate, and teaching-related administration. The School takes career development very seriously, and will provide appropriately tailored mentoring in both research and teaching.

A PhD in Operational Research or Optimization (or a closely related discipline) and some experience of relevant teaching at University level is essential, as well as being able to demonstrate independence, effective team working, good communication and interpersonal skills.

Salary Scale: £44,414 - £52,841 per annum. Very strong and experienced applicants may be appointed to a Readership, for which the salary is in the range £56,048 - £63,059 p.a..

Please ensure that your online application includes an up-to-date CV, research statement and teaching statement, and that in addition, three references are sent to references@maths.ed.ac.uk by the closing date quoting Job Req 7361

ABOUT US As a world-leading research-intensive University, we are here to address tomorrow’s greatest challenges. Between now and 2030 we will do that with a values-led approach to teaching, research and innovation, and through the strength of our relationships, both locally and globally. ABOUT THE TEAM The School of Mathematics is one of the world’s leading mathematical sciences departments, home to internationally excellent researchers and to an innovative educational environment for both undergraduates and postgraduates. Our location in the beautiful and historic capital of Scotland puts us in the centre of a vibrant community of academics, cultural institutions, industry partners and research institutes.

As a School we value both the breadth and depth of our mathematical research. We have over seventy permanent members of academic staff and over twenty research fellows and research associates, who come from across the world and together cover a broad range of research topics in pure and applied mathematics, operational research and statistics. Our Graduate School has over eighty research students and over one hundred MSc students, and our postgraduate provision has gone from strength to strength with the recent introduction of Doctoral Training Centres in Analysis and its Applications, and in Data Science. We have close links with the School of Informatics and are actively involved in current data science developments, particularly as one of the 5 UK-wide partners in the Alan Turing Institute.

The School is passionate about delivering a world-leading educational environment for its students and is constantly exploring new ideas in mathematical education in order to provide a stimulating learning environment. Quantitative skills have never been more in demand in the world, and our students graduate with strong skills in critical thinking, independent learning and communication. Within 6 months of graduating, 93% of our students are in full-time employment or study. In 2010 the Teaching Programme review "welcomed the excellent quality of education" provided by the School.

The School of Mathematics is dedicated to valuing and celebrating diversity, and ensuring equality of opportunity for all staff, students, and visitors. We are committed to creating a community which is inclusive and respectful of all our staff and students, and their lived experiences.
