University of Glasgow College of Science & Engineering School of Mathematics & Statistics

Research Associate Vacancy Reference: 117148 Salary: Grade 7, £38,474 - £43,155 per annum.

This post is full time and fixed term for up to 4 years.

Relocation assistance will be provided where appropriate.

The School Mathematics & Statistics is looking to recruit a Research Associate to make a leading contribution to the development of mathematical theories, modelling and simulation of liquid crystal phases and devices working with Prof. Nigel Mottram and collaborators. This project aims to support and advance ongoing projects in the mathematical modelling of liquid crystals at the University of Glasgow, including projects that consider micro-display modelling, the role of defects and confinement in nematic liquid crystals and free-surface effects. As well as assisting in the further development of these projects, the successful candidate will be encouraged to develop their own independent lines of research, mentored by Prof. Mottram. There will also be opportunities to develop collaborations and apply for personal research funding, for instance in the form of fellowships. Applicants are expected to have research experience in the modelling of liquid crystal fluids, fluid dynamics and the simulation of liquid crystal devices using continuum theory. The School of Mathematics and Statistics at Glasgow aims to develop a nurturing and friendly environment for our researchers to work in. We use our resources to build excellence in our own research, to develop collaborations and networks with others, and to enable our researchers to continually develop within a positive environment. We do this by promoting equality, diversity and inclusiveness and welcome applications from all sections of the community. The School values diversity and we particularly welcome applications from women and under-represented communities. We support applications from those returning from a career break and are happy to discuss flexible working arrangements. All appointments will be made on merit. Visit https://www.gla.ac.uk/myglasgow/humanresources/equalitydiversity/ for further information.

Informal enquiries about the role are welcomed, and should be addressed to Prof. Nigel Mottram (Nigel.Mottram@glasgow.ac.uk).
