Position Description:

*** this position has been closed. ***

We are looking for a highly motivated researcher and teacher in mathematical optimization to join us as a senior lecturer or an associate professor, to strengthen our research groups in mathematical optimization and computational mathematics at the division of Applied Mathematics and Statistics, Department of Mathematical Sciences.

Researchers at the division conduct internationally recognized research in areas such as the theory and implementation of finite element methods, mathematical optimization, inverse and ill-posed problems, kinetic equations, stochastic partial differential equations, geometric integration, biomathematics, spatial statistics, and data science. More specifically, current research within mathematical optimization at the division focuses on modelling of applied optimization problems as well as developing theory and algorithms for the solution of these models.

Information about the department and the research The Department of Mathematical Sciences belongs to Chalmers University of Technology and the University of Gothenburg. The department has about 200 faculty and staff and is one of the largest departments of mathematical sciences in the Nordic countries. We teach a broad spectrum of courses across programs at the two universities. Internationally high-level research is pursued in both pure and applied mathematics, as well as in mathematical statistics.

Major responsibilities We look forward to your contribution to our research in the area of mathematical optimization, interpreted in a broad sense. This includes, but is not limited to, linear and integer optimization, non-linear programming, combinatorial optimization, non-smooth optimization, inverse problems, optimal control, calculus of variations, machine learning, multilevel optimization, operations research, as well as modelling and solution of applied optimization problems.

You will teach mathematics at all levels, including supervision of undergraduate, master, and PhD students. Current undergraduate and master’s levels teaching in mathematical optimization at the division includes linear, non-linear, and integer optimization, as well as decomposition methods for large-scale optimization. Our academic year is divided into four quarters, and it is usually possible to organize the teaching assignments so that one or two quarters are free of teaching.

You will conduct independent research in collaboration with our researchers as well as with external collaborators. You are expected to actively apply for external funding for your research projects. There will also be some departmental committee work.

Contract terms Full-time permanent employment.

The level of the position will be decided based on the qualifications of the selected candidate. For a definition of the academic level and qualifications for the two positions, please consult our Rules of Procedure – Chalmers University of Technology's Appointment Regulations for Teaching and Research Faculty (Senior lecturer chapter 7.2 and Associate professor at chapter 6.3). Your qualifications and academic level will be evaluated by the department, Chalmers Faculty Appointment Committee and external evaluators.

Qualifications You must have a doctoral degree in mathematics or in another relevant field. A good record of academic research and well-documented university level teaching experience are required. Your research in mathematics should address the development of theory, modelling, and computational methods within the field of optimization, while applications of the mathematical research to various areas of science, engineering, and economics, as well as competence in operations research, are meritorious.

The following qualifications are also meritorious: - Postdoctoral positions or corresponding, especially at another institution or organization than where the doctoral studies were performed, - Experience of teaching in mathematical optimization, - Experience of course development and program management, - Shown ability to attract external funding.

If you have not taken courses on teaching in higher education, you are expected to take such courses — given at Chalmers — within two years. The pedagogical course requirements are described here.

The position requires good verbal and written communication skills in English. If needed, Chalmers offers Swedish language courses, with the aim that you will be able to teach in Swedish within two years.

We offer Chalmers offers a cultivating and inspiring working environment in the coastal city of Gothenburg. Read more about working at Chalmers and our benefits for employees.

Chalmers aims to actively improve our gender balance. We work broadly with equality projects, for example the GENIE Initiative on gender equality for excellence. Equality and diversity are substantial foundations in all activities at Chalmers.

Application procedure The application should be marked with Ref 20230268 and written in English. The application should be sent electronically and be attached as PDF-files, as below. Maximum size for each file is 40 MB. Please note that the system does not support Zip files.
