We invite applications for a joint AI for Science postdoctoral researcher position to work with Prof. Ruobing Dong's group at the department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Victoria (UVic) and Prof. Kwang Moo Yi's group at the department of Computer Science at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in Canada. The initial appointment is for two years, with the possibility of a one-year extension, depending on the performance of the researcher and the availability of funding.

Candidates should have a Ph.D. in (applied) math, computer science, statistics, physics / astronomy, or a related field. We seek applicants with a solid background in some of the following fields: machine learning, neural fields, physics informed neural networks, surrogate models, and fluid mechanics. Experiences with numerical simulations in astrophysics (e.g., (magneto)hydrodynamics or radiative transfer) are desirable, though not necessary.

The main role of the researcher will be to lead research projects in applying machine learning techniques to simulations and/or surrogate modeling in astronomy, with a focus on accretion disks and planet formation. Other responsibilities include publishing papers at top astronomy, machine learning, and applied math journals and conferences, and advising students. The researcher will also have freedom to pursue independent research on related topics.

The position includes research and travel budget. While it is primarily based at UVic, the researcher will have opportunities to interact and collaborate with scientists at the UVic Astronomy Research Center, the department of Computer Science at UBC, and the NRC Herzberg Astronomy and Astrophysics Research Centre, on topics related to AI for Science. The researcher will have access to computing facilities at the Digital Research Alliance of Canada.

The position is available immediately, and is expected to start before December 2023. Remote work is possible upon discussion. To apply, candidates are invited to send an email with a single PDF file to mlpostdoc@uvic.ca containing a cover letter (1 page maximum), a CV with full publication list, and a brief statement of research experiences and interests (3 pages maximum). Candidates should also arrange for three letters of reference to be e-mailed to the same address with a title "UVic_MLPostdoc_CandidateLastName_LetterWriterLastName". Applications received by July 31, 2023 will receive full consideration.

Standard benefits and health insurance at UVic are included. The University is an equal opportunity employer and welcomes applications from underrepresented groups.
