Position Description

The Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science at Heidelberg University invites applications for a

Tenure Track Professorship (W1 with Tenure Track to W3) in Mathematical Data Science and Optimization (f/m/d)

Your responsibilities:
The research interests of a successful applicant should strengthen the Institute for Mathematics in the area of Mathematical Data Science, Optimization and Numerical Analysis and contribute to the university’s strategic initiative “Science-Based Machine Learning“ in fundamental aspects.

Your qualification:
We are looking for a mathematician with a clear, mathematically innovative research perspective in the area of Machine Learning and/or Data Science, and a developing track record in Optimization or another relevant core area of applied mathematics.
  • Applicants are expected to have an excellent publication and research record.
  • Active engagement within the Interdisciplinary Center for Scientific Computing (IWR), the Carl-Zeiss-Center for Model-Based Artificial Intelligence, as well as the DFG Cluster of Excellence STRUCTURES is highly desirable.
  • Participation in the administrative tasks of the institute and the faculty is expected, as well teaching at all levels. This includes especially the planned Masters program “Mathematics of Machine Learning and Data Science“, but also foundational mathematics modules.
The hiring requirements of Section 51 Landeshochschulgesetz Baden-Württemberg (the Baden-Württemberg State Higher Education Act) apply. If you spent time employed as a research assistant (before or after your doctorate), this employment and the period of your doctoral studies combined should not exceed six years.

We offer
a vibrant, internationally leading mathematical research environment with ample opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration, in particular with the Natural Sciences and the Life Sciences. The professorship is a temporary qualification position. It is funded by the Tenure Track Programme of the German Federal Government and the Federal States. The Tenure Track Professorship (salary grade W1) will initially be limited to six years and, following a positive tenure evaluation, will be converted to a permanent W3 professorship. The evaluation statute can be downloaded from the homepage of the Human Resources Division (http://www.uni-heidelberg.de/tenuretrack). Provided that the general legal (German civil service law) and budgetary regulations are fulfilled, it is intended that the employment will have civil service status.

Applications with the usual documents (curriculum vitae, description of scientific interests, list of publications, record of teaching activities – as a single PDF-document), as well as two recommendation letters from international experts should be submitted electronically, quoting the keyword MDSO, per email (stellen@mathinf.uni-heidelberg.de) until 31.08.2023 to: Dekan der Fakultät für Mathematik und Informatik, Prof. Dr. Christoph Schnörr, Im Neuenheimer Feld 205, D-69120 Heidelberg, Germany. Please address any inquiries about the position to Prof. Dr. Jan Johannes (johannes@math.uni-heidelberg.de).

Heidelberg University stands for equal opportunities and diversity. Qualified female candidates are especially invited to apply. Persons with severe disabilities will be given preference if they are equally qualified.
