The Department of Mathematics and Statistics in the College of Arts and Sciences at American University in Washington, DC invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position for a Data Scientist at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning August 1, 2024. Applicants must have a PhD in Data Science, Statistics, or Applied Mathematics, or a closely related discipline by August 1, 2024. Candidates will be required to demonstrate a clear record of academic or professional experience and expertise in statistical/mathematical theory with application of data science methods and tools. Candidates will be required to demonstrate alignment of their teaching and research to the Department’s mission and research programs. Preferred areas of expertise and experience include machine learning; natural language processing; deep learning; trustworthy, explainable, transparent algorithms; and ethics in data science.

Responsibilities include establishing an internationally recognized research program that engages students at all levels and wins external funding, collaborating across the university in research and grant efforts, teaching undergraduate and/or graduate courses a year with associated curriculum development for new courses, and delivering service to the department and to the wider university. In addition to scholarship and teaching, responsibilities will include participation in department, school, and university service.

The letter shall include a clear description how they will contribute to the Data Science programs of the department. In addition, applicants shall submit a curriculum vitae, a two-page statement on their teaching philosophy and teaching record, and a two-page statement on their research objectives and grant experience. Applicants shall arrange for submission of at least three letters of recommendation dated within the last year, at least one of which shall address teaching ability.
