Position Description
The Department of Mathematics at Jacksonville University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position at the assistant professor level starting in August 2024. A doctorate in applied mathematics, mathematics, physics, or a closely related field is required before the starting date. Applicants should be qualified to teach both mathematics and physics courses at the university level, including courses in the Calculus sequence and calculus-based introductory physics courses. The successful candidate will hold a joint position in the Department of Mathematics and the Department of Chemistry and Physics.
The Department of Mathematics and the Department of Chemistry and Physics are housed in the School of Sciences and Mathematics. The Department of Mathematics offers BA and BS degrees in mathematics as well as a BS in data science in collaboration with the Department of Computing Science. The Department of Chemistry and Physics offers BA and BS degrees in chemistry, biochemistry and physics. The School of Sciences and Mathematics is committed to providing an exceptional learning environment to a diverse undergraduate audience while using modern approaches to pedagogy and use of technology. The successful candidate will have a strong interest in undergraduate teaching and mentorship and is expected to maintain an active research program, including undergraduate research, in addition to providing service to the department and university.
The standard teaching load is 24 credits per academic year and will be split evenly between Mathematics and Physics courses. The teaching load typically includes a broad range of lower-level and upper-level courses. The minimal requirement for this position is the ability to teach calculus-based introductory physics courses as well as Calculus 1 and 2. Opportunities for teaching online and during winter and summer terms may be available.
Candidates should have a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics, Mathematics, or a closely related field with 18 graduate credits in Physics coursework, or a Ph.D. in Physics or a closely related field with 18 graduate credits in Mathematics coursework, by the time of appointment in August 2024.
