Position Description

The Mathematics Department at the University of British Columbia (Vancouver) invites you to apply for postdoctoral researcher positions, for appointments to begin during the 2024/2025 academic year.

You should hold a PhD or equivalent degree, or expect to receive one before September 1, 2024. Typically, the position requires a PhD obtained in 2021 or later and must be started within five years of obtaining your PhD. If your PhD was obtained before 2021, we invite you to describe your career trajectory, e.g. interruptions or alternative career paths, in your cover letter.

Offers are made by individual faculty members who will be funding the positions and you should contact potential supervisors after submitting an application. If appointed, your precise duties will therefore be agreed with your supervisor, but normally include research collaboration with researchers at UBC, and some teaching duties. Typically, appointments are for two to three years and start around September 1, 2024.

We take our commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) seriously, and we strive to offer a productive and inclusive space to train junior researchers. We encourage applications from people from historically underrepresented groups in the mathematical sciences, particularly from women and non-binary persons, Indigenous persons, persons with disabilities, members of visible minority/racialized groups, and members of 2SLGBTQIA+ communities. In your cover letter, we invite you to describe your personal or professional experience with the interactions between EDI and mathematics.

Applications should be submitted on-line using https://www.mathjobs.org.

You should submit a cover letter, a CV (including a list of all publications), statements of research and teaching interests, and arrange for three or more letters of recommendation to be sent, one of which should address teaching ability. Your cover letter should give the names of up to three UBC faculty members whose research interests are closest to yours. Questions about the application procedure should be addressed to the Executive Coordinator at exec-coord(at)math.ubc.ca or to a faculty member in your research area.

We will make every effort to accommodate candidates with special needs (physical, medical, family responsibilities, etc.). To confidentially accommodate your special needs, please contact the Executive Coordinator at exec-coord(at)math.ubc.ca.

Screening of applications for appointments beginning in the academic year 2024-2025 will commence on November 15, 2023. Applications received after this date will be considered as long as positions remain available.
