Position Description

The Vanderbilt Department of Mathematics is seeking exceptional recent PhD recipients in Mathematics for two honorific postdoctoral fellows affiliated with the Vanderbilt Initiative for Gravity, Waves, and Fluids (VandyGRAF).

The VandyGRAF Initiative is a collaborative effort between Vanderbilt University's Departments of Mathematics and Physics & Astronomy to work on problems of outstanding scientific merit in general relativity, fluid mechanics, PDE theory, and nuclear physics. VandyGRAF hosts a weekly seminar series with diverse guests and open scientific discussion. Ideal candidates will be excited to contribute to this atmosphere of open inquiry and learn about fields adjacent to their own; see https://vandygraf.github.io for more information.

Two postdoctoral positions in Mathematics are available, with appointments to begin in Fall 2024. The positions are for three years at the rank of Postdoctoral Scholar, carry the title of VandyGRAF Fellow, have a teaching component of one course per academic year, and a competitive salary. Each VandyGRAF Fellow will be provided with yearly research funds to support their scientific endeavors.

Candidates from all relevant areas of research will be considered, with a particular focus on mathematical general relativity, fluid mechanics, hyperbolic PDE theory, and geometry. VandyGRAF Fellows will be co-mentored by Profs. Marcelo Disconzi and Jared Speck.

To apply, please submit the following documents online: AMS cover sheet, cover letter, CV, research statement, teaching statement, and four recommendation letters (to submitted by the letter writers through MathJobs.org), one of which should address teaching qualifications of the candidate. Application review will commence on November 1, 2023 and will continue until the positions are filled.
