Position Description

The Department of Mathematics & Statistics at James Madison University invites applications for one tenure-track positions in mathematics or applied mathematics at the rank of assistant professor beginning fall 2024. We seek candidates with interest and expertise in data science as applied to climate sciences or environmental analytics and who can collaborate with our Environmental Data Science cohort. Collaborations could involve data science, machine learning, topological data analysis, network science, ecological models, mathematical biology, time series, data mining and management, or other related areas. 

 

James Madison University is a 22,000-student R2 state research university with a primarily undergraduate focus located in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. Our energetic, collegial department is home to 55 full-time faculty in the areas of pure mathematics, applied mathematics, statistics, and mathematics education. Our programs provide meaningful learning experiences for majors and non-majors alike, both within and outside the classroom. We care about people and value high-quality undergraduate education. The teaching load is approximately 9 contact hours per semester. Scholarship is supported and valued in a variety of forms across all disciplines represented in the department. We have a strong history of supporting undergraduate research and outreach efforts, including running a long-standing math NSF-REU and a large undergraduate research conference. Recent evidence of our commitment to Environmental Data Science includes the addition of a departmental concentration in  Data Science and minor in  Computational Analytics, and interdisciplinary programs which include the  Biotechnology  major and the  Data Analytics,  Climate Science,  Materials Science, and a host of  Environmental minors.
